It's just the midfield balance was off whether he played. Played well vs PSG, was poor vs Milan, didn’t look any better than Longstaff when he came on vs Dortmund, and that was it. Not sure he would have been the difference between qualifying or not.
SUPERTOON
Thought he was the best player on the pitch against Villa, and the liveprool game until he went off. Other than that not I think he has been really poor.
Geogaddi
I think it may have been against Brighton when Tonali practically gave up for one of the goals ?
The Prophet
Edit: I'm potentially getting my games mixed up. Thought he was decent enough v Villa, Liverpool, West Ham, PSG and City in the cup.
timeEd32
I think it's very fair to say we probably didn't see the best out of him given a new league, new system, new language, and the secret looming over him. But I'm going to dislike him very quickly if he continues to lazily trackback, especially knowing he's genuinely fast based on the UEFA speed data. BShearer
Tonali did have some good games and some mediocre. quite hard to rate him in any way based on small sample and his personal dealings in the background. he probably got to find out that shit hits the fan in terms of prosecution. I dont know what he was thinking, maybe getting away from Italy can keep the lid on this mess? it did seem strange Milan was ok to sell their talisman young Italian midfielder. I bet Milan had a sniff of the upcoming shower of shit and they played us and Tonali played us too unfortuntely which is still a big issue for me. my worry is that he will become homesick next season and ask for a transfer back to Italy and we get some laughable fee from someone. if that happens its clear he just wanted us to be the losers to spend his ban and fuck us then he returns to Italy. lets hope its the other option with him becoming a crucial player for us after his ban and repays his transfer fee and some more for the way the club helped him and handles this mess he caused... Happened in another away game too, can't remember which now. Fwiw even in pre season he was getting bollockings from Schar and others for not closing down people on the edge of the box. Myleftboot
Got a feeling that if he returns next season and doesn’t play a 10/10 every game he’s going to get pelters.
timeEd32
If that happens he will be vilified and rightly so. I'm far more optimistic though - I think we're going to see a player who is far more comfortable with the language and the system, a huge monkey off his back, and a debt to be repaid to the club, his coaches, and his teammates. The Prophet
He was a massively mixed bag individually, while the midfield frequently looked imbalanced as a collective with him in there. He isn't the first player not to grasp what Howe wants from him to begin with and he won't be the last.
gbandit
I think he’ll be class. He’s clearly technically very strong, he has more speed than anyone else playing centrally and he can attack and defend. He’s also got a fantastic dead ball delivery and will eventually take that on over Trippier. Struggle to see how it doesn’t work out unless there are personal issues or he doesn’t end up feeling settled. He needs to give his absolute all to salvage his career and reputation
Matt1892
The thing with Tonali is that if he was average in all of his performances I wouldn’t be worried as I would put that down to him needing time to adapt to the league and style of football; however, his performances have been the complete polar opposite in some games, from excellent in some to embarrassingly shite in others. Hopefully it is a language issue and understanding the role asked of him but I do find the mad fluctuations in performances a concern.

The Prophet
I don't think I've watched any of our players this season and thought they were embarrassingly shite, might just be me though.
1964
Tonali was also playing knowing he had a gambling problem which must have affected him, possibly even knowing it was coming out

Matt1892
What really surprised me about Tonali was how bad he was on the ball at times, he seemed to give the ball away way more than any of our other midfielders.

Yorkie
Nowt wrong with saying he was rubbish, mind. He was, save for his debut and the odd spell. Obviously it's far too hasty to make an overall judgement but I think you'd have to be truly dim to do that anyway.

He needs to give his absolute all to salvage his career and reputation Technically - thought he was better than everyone bar Bruno in midfield. But a long way off Bruno. Solid but not top drawer. Good athlete but not totally up to speed with the pace and physicality of the PL. He lost as many duels as he won but was always able to make it a duel. I thought after a year playing in the PL he would win more of those. But speed-wise he's not faster than Joelinton and definitely not faster than Willock. His dead-ball delivery and general crossing were strong. Very strong. He wasn't as good tactically or off-the-ball as I had hoped. As someone mentioned, Brighton and another game - some signs of real lazy play when closing players down. Turning his back. We had heard so much about his workrate, personality and graft and it was a step below the standard we are used too. Again, I thought that was a pace of the PL type thing and a year of Howe ball he would understand. Similar maybe to Paqueta. When he first joined he wasn't right at it - but now he's everywhere, sharp, first to the tackle etc. I hope that will come with Tonali. There's lots of green shoots. But that's all it is. He could easily go the other way. He looked a potentially v. solid all-rounder. But he didn't click in. I never thought of him as a massive talent the way I see Isak or Bruno. Then again, I didn't see it in Gordon either and he definitely has it. At least with Gordon there was work-rate and pace. Apart from maybe crossing/deadballs, I don't see any standout attributes. But maybe the standout attribute is how well-rounded he potentially is.
NWMag
In terms of positives of Tonali I thought he had a lot more composure on the ball that most of our other midfielders, happy to do quick one touch, sometimes I felt the issue was he was too quick for our team, in terms of what the rest of the team were used to. I think once he is back in the side and fully understands how we play, he will certainly help us become more controlling in possession and comfortable on the ball.
