NUFC Transfer Rumours

Optimistic Nut

Can't let perfect become the enemy of the good, your Raphinha's and those on similar wages are a lot for the club to stomach, and quite literally any RW we buy somewhere north of 10m would feel an upgrade based on what we have

This is actually the worst thing we can do. Settling for players who are maybe a modest improvement is how we'd get stuck in a never-ending cycle of being average with no money to spend.

There is a market between Raphinha and Reiss Nelson, though maybe that player isn't available right now.

Not by much at all. If at all. I know PSR etc dictated we had to sell Minteh but both him & Murphy have better ‘numbers’ that Nelson. That’s just getting a body in for the sake of it. He wouldn’t improve us massively.

Nothing to suggest he improves us at all tbh.

But you can pay for that 150k p/w from the 10-12m you would save on the transfer fee of such a player? Normally they would have expected to have paid 25m let's say, even 20m.
So the budget is still there so to speak.

Not really the point. If he turned out to be average, every decent player in the squad you try and negotiate a new contract with will have their agent saying “well he’s contributing more than him, and he’s on £150k, so…”

I think the disagreement then is that I don't think we need to improve massively at every position we have that needs an upgrade... I'd take any upgrade on what we have at RW, so long as the price is reasonable. We don't need every transfer to be 40m+

No point buying a marginally better player than miggy then have to upgrade on him again. That RW position is becoming so frustrating it’s absolutely screaming out for a player of the level of Isak & Gordon. Not Reiss fuckin Nelson

Understand the sentiment, but important to remember that Gordon became who he is now after joining us.

If this is true, it may be they're going down the untapped potential route again, and think he could find a much higher level with regular minutes.

They would have had to have been following him in the Europa league, or when he was on loan at Feyenoord I imagine, to gather info on him.

For me I couldn't even say what to expect from him, as he hasn't featured enough in the Prem to really know.

I agree with you here.

If there isn't an obvious big hitter, then I think we should try and improve still with a player that doesn't break the bank, but that might over achieve given an opportunity.

Whether that guy is Reiss Nelson I have no idea. It is interesting, as @Matt1892 mentioned, that we went after him last summer, when his contract was up. Suggests we have some intel on him that we like.

Totally agree on needing to find cheaper deals.

I would not want to spend £20m (or anything really) on a player who is a minor upgrade. Improving massively when and where we can is how we got to where we are so quickly.

It's very different though if we think that £20m player is undervalued / has a much higher ceiling. If we think Reiss Nelson is that then great.

Chiesa is finished. Let it go…

Nelson is at the age where what you see is what you get. For our position, I'd rather stay clear. Bit different if he was a few years younger and playing quite a bit and was raw.

If this is the route we wanted to go down we should have gotten Callum Hudson Odoi instead he had much more calibre and had been linked with Bayern for 60m, and Forest bought him for 3m!

So that’s a no brainer, not 20m or whatever on Nelson who has never done anything major

You can critique various parts of our transfer strategy, but we are virtually flawless on talent spotting and development since the takeover (especially after the desperation of January 2022, not that that was bad by any means):

Pope - hit

Botman - hit

Targett - we know he's solid; just bad luck

Isak - hit

Gordon - hit

Tonali - jury still out

Tino - hit

Minteh - hit

Barnes - hit

Hall - hit

Once Tonali repays us this season we're basically flawless. Totally fair to question how we've allocated our money in terms of the cost, which positions we've prioritized, or whether we should have had better info from the Italian underworld, but Howe and Nickson have not missed on the very basic question of "is this player good?"

Generally agree with you.

Harvey Barnes wouldn't necessarily have down as a 'hit' just yet. Would personally say the jury is still out on that one.

I don't think there's any doubt that he's a good player who will produce goals. Whether that was the optimal use of funds can very much be debated.

Missing quite a few transfers from that list @timeEd32

Am I? Started in summer 2022 mainly because I didn't want to inadvertently start a Chris Wood discussion again or a Dan Burn debate. But..

Targett loan - hit

Trippier - hit

Burn - hit for the price (no discussion allowed)

Wood - no rating to avoid debate

Bruno - hit of a lifetime

MISS. People so afraid of criticising anything.

Not afraid -- just don't want to rehash it. That transfer was different though - we knew what we were getting and we didn't think it was an elite player. It's why I think it's irrelevant to the point I'm making.
