I'd love for us to have lots of better players than Longstaff, but at least 4 of them must come from the academy or it's a waste of time because they can't be registered. Until we have those 4 on our books, Longstaff's value is way in excess of what it would be if he were not from our youth setup. In fact his value to us is so much greater than his value to anyone else that he's basically not able to be sold.

Dani Olmo even on loan for the RW would be a game changer for the rest of the season. Barca are having trouble registering him. Would be a purple without the big spend if we wanted to buy in the summer

Will Lewis Hall count as club developed in a couple years. You have to be registered at a club for 3 years between 17 and 21 so I think he just about makes it. But maybe not if the loan year doesn't count?

Yes, he’ll count as club developed. 

 

Wouldn’t be shocked if we signed Freddie Woodman on a free this summer to get another HG on the books as part of the GK group.

It's a non-starter. Longstaff will stay. And, as I said, quite rightly. We should have kept Anderson for the same reason. The only reason you should sell PL-quality academy players is if you've got a surplus of them. We don't.

 

 

 

it’s still the same argument though, quick glance down the squad and I think we have 24 players in the squad today who we would look at registering, which includes all 4 goalkeepers, and then you have Miley who is a ‘freebie’. I may have missed someone.
 

I guess you would not register Ruddy and Vlach plus 1 more so the question remains is the squad stronger at this 21 plus Longstaff and Miley or do you make the 21 stronger by selling Longstaff. We’ve got a bench padded with list B on players regardless.

I guess we would be buying a few players under 21 in January/Summer anyway so you can pad the European squad out with them anyway - in future years the players we have been buying for development will allow us to register a full squad of 25 for Europe, but to say that we shouldn't sell Longstaff if the right offer comes in just so he can sit on the bench in a CL match is naive - we will.need to sell to buy and improve, and he is seemingly one of the few players worth money that Howe is willing to let go

I feel like where we’re sitting in the league and building some momentum with real balance to the way we’re set up at the moment with Tonali a key attacking addition at RW could make all the difference in a push for Europe.

Have been thinking this since the news broke about the issue. Would be fantastic but no doubt unrealistic I guess with figures involved still.

All this talk of not needing Sean Longstaff during a European campaign in particular is folly. If we are forced to register a reduced squad size, then injury and accumulation of games and fatigue could destroy our season again. We cannot have the same 15 or so players playing every game. There isn’t another lad in the academy that can step up and provide what Sean does, not for the foreseeable. He’s a senior pro, with bags of talent and experience, who can do a job when called upon, especially as a rotation option which is what he will accept he is now. If we make europa or conference , and for domestic cups and league games against the bottom half he would more than hold his own in the early rounds allowing our better players to rest. What we don’t want is Sean starting against the best sides frequently.

As a fan base we massively under appreciate his worth, both in monetary and footballing terms. Selling Sean for a few bob is great from a psr perspective, I get it, but a replacement of similar standing is going to have a similar cost. Some of the fan base, match going and online treat local players poorly, not every lad born a geordie can be as good as Gazza or Shearer.

Yeah but don't you know, when you sell a player for £20m and then buy a player for £20m you can activate the infinite money glitch if you shout "AMORTISATION" when he signs.

 

You only have to pay the first installment of the new player's fee and can totally write off the other 4 years, it just disappears into the ether.

I know what you are saying. Barcelona are in the CL though so surely they would send him elsewhere? It’s only a 6 month loan after all.

I agree about willing buyers and this is where the Guehi "bid" does not make sense. How could we bid for a player knowing we would then have to sell without a buyer lined up? If we did have a buyer lined up then we should have sold that player. 

 

Only thing I can think of is that there's now an understanding in the PL that clubs with PSR troubles will trade amongst themselves to get out of trouble in future.

It has to be more complicated than just having to sell a player. For example finishing 4th and reaching a cup final means millions in extra prize money, probably prevents any sale. I think a big reason for the issues last season is the club had expected to get further in the CL/Europe, but this season a lot more of the revenue e.g. sponsorship is locked in rather than variable.

 

But overall These are calculated risks the club has to take.
