The Guehi thing just doesnt make sense to me, he isnt worth more than our best players so why risk having to sell one of them for him?

It does line up with the short termism that was apparently present before Mitchell got there. Feel like this is why, when Mitchell came in, he was very clear that in that window he was there to help facilitate plans the club already had in place. Really got the impression he wasn't on board with it.

Would be an embarrassing season for Villa if they didn't.

Would have to question if Emery has taken them as far as he can.

I’m not sure about that. IMO we’ve a far better starting 11 and they’ve got the extra 8 and now more champions league games. Lot of people on here saying last season they’d understand if we didn’t get top 4 as we had the champions league. I think to say it would be an embarrassing season if they finish below is a bit daft considering we currently sit 5th

His posts are tongue in cheek, not really meant to be taken seriously.

Apropos of nothing, Caulkin all but said Man City bought Khusanov to prevent us from doing so. So that's both him and Tosin where that's happened now.

We can't really win. It's critical that we stay active and have things in the pipeline, but then you've got agents letting the cat out of the bag and driving interest.

Restrict spending somehow, fine, whatever. I don't want to be Man City anyway. But apply it fairly, you fucking dicks.

The "buying so no-one else can" is the real kick in the bollocks like isn't it.

I think most of us can probably accept that for the time being if it's a straight shoot-out between us and one of the so-called "big boys" and there's genuine interest (i.e. if we go back for Guehi but Liverpool want him because van Dijk is away) we probably have to say fair enough, but when it's essentially just a flex it does make us look like we're pissing into the wind

Didn't even buy in Chelsea/Tosin's case.

It's literally Jeff Bezos sneaking through the exit door at Lidl and raiding the basket for the food bank.

Unfortunately these rules were brought in specifically to stop us spending so they are working exactly as intended.

I also don’t think we need to spend big in the summer, we just need to be smarter with whatever budget we have. Not a dig or to bring back up arguments about previous transfers etc, but moving forward we need to really be smart with our money.

You don't believe this do you? They bought him to prevent a club who aren't even in the same ballpark as them to buying him?

Sounds like a fairytale to me.

Because there are 5 teams going for 2 places and strengthening one gives more opportunity for the other 3 to drop points when we play them

That's such a weird argument [emoji38] Why not loan him to Fulham or Brighton then who aren't directly competing with City.

According to Caulkin we were all set for a summer purchase.

How you present it here is a bit reductive. I can fully see them identify that their CBs are aging and they need to invest this summer or next. He'll have been one of many players they were monitoring and they got wind we were looking at him. They look again at their data and their reports and then decide that he could be a top level CB for the next decade and as there is now a likelihood that if they wait they will miss out, they pounced. Was it just to block us, no. Are we (or any other club firming up their interest) a factor in their decision, yes.

Doubt it was done to spite Newcastle, just that City knew they’d have competition for his signature in the summer and they might not win out, so they moved while other clubs couldn’t. He’s a player they want

Basically what I said. But the reductive headline grabs attention the factual but more nuanced one doesn't.

"PSR powered city pounce to block Toon's ambitions." Etc. etc.

Probably more like they bought him now to avoid the additional competition in the summer.
