Does it effectively mean that you have to sign players with a view to reselling at a profit? Or would there be a way to sign an expensive older player who would end their career with you without it being financially ruinous? A system that means you can't buy players older than about 25 seems very bad for clubs and players. You don’t have to sign players that you’re going to be able to resell, but if you’re buying players with little potential resale value, you probably best hope they perform well enough to get you to where you want to be so you can make the required income from other areas (CL being the obvious one). There hasn’t been much evidence of it yet, but you’d maybe hope that it eventually drives down the wages of older players a bit, so clubs don’t get stuck with players in their 30’s, on ridiculous money, that they can’t shift. I’m expecting the opposite actually, older players are more actively looking to run down their contracts as the transfer demand has gone down and their wages end up going up due to free transfers. It’s such a backwards result of these sustainability rules that clubs are forced to sell young homegrown talent as a) pure profit and b) the pool of teams that can afford to take the risk and sign expensive 27-30 year olds is really small and even they seem hesitant to do it. He is 29 this year and probably has about two good years left in him. We obviously wanted Mbeumo and Delap but Chelsea and Man United have blown us out the water with wages. What exactly do you mean that Eddie has to deliver? He's restricted with FFP and we can't just spend and buy whatever we want like our rivals can. We certainly can't pay the wages they can either . He brought us the likes of Tonali, Bruno, Isak and Botman so he has nothing to prove in the transfer market . Why should we have to sell Tino or Gordon which theoretically makes us weaker just so we can buy a few extra players who may or may not improve the squad ? He has to deliver as he is the one clearly in control of transfers now. Last summers sh** show was down to either Eddie or Mitchell. None of us know which one but it was definitely one of them who were digging their heels in and at odds with what the other wanted. Only those inside the club will know which one it was. I highly doubt Eddie did sign them it was more than likely it was Nickson /Mandys team/Ashworth. And if he did well then let’s have some more of that type from Europe as there must be plenty of gems in Europe for a reasonable price. Every club has to sell players. You can’t just keep buying and buying and spending and spending without selling to balance the books and reinvest. Liverpool sold coutinho and replaced him with 2-3 top signings and won the lot. Villa sold grealish as a bottom half club and used the money to start to build a top 6 squad. Even Man City and Chelsea a few years after their takeovers sold plenty of top players for good money to keep things ticking along financially. You can’t sit on a 500m pound squad and then plead poverty. Edited Wednesday at 16:58 by Chiaia

Every year i'm always ready for the season ending, with a feeling of "The footballs over now, everyone can relax and unwind for a bit before coming back in 6/8 weeks", and then two days after having read this thread i'm back to wanting football back, not because I actually want to watch football, but to get away for the tedious debate and seemingly endless worry that people have over the Transfer window

I would be confident we could improve the squad with that money and if we do have to sell a purple eventually then he is the most disposable. If Diaz goes maybe they would look at Gordon. For a reasonable fee I'd let him go, don't particularly like his attitude and we have Barnes already.

Also Barnes is now as, if not more, effective than him on the left, and we have decent cover there in Joelinton and Willock. Yea, we won’t at all go backwards by having Barnes as main LW and needing to use Willock or Joelinton LW as back up If for some reason we sold Gordon for big money, we’d need to replace him for big money. Weezertron Posted Wednesday at 17:22 Share Posted Wednesday at 17:22 It's the wrong time to sell Gordon I reckon. Unless Liverpool are desperate enough to overpay for him. Give him the first half of next season to build up some form and flog him in January at an inflated price (if we're inclined to do so)

Thanks! So it seems like it limits the pool of clubs that can take a risk on more established players to either those with other areas of profit or those with established footballing revenue. Would be interesting to see how PL clubs would have fared without mega money deals from Saudi clubs. 47 minutes ago, Pata said: I’m expecting the opposite actually, older players are more actively looking to run down their contracts as the transfer demand has gone down and their wages end up going up due to free transfers. Yeah, my thinking was that it will effect transfer demand for players past say 26-27. You're right though that that could benefit players - either their current club is incentivised to keep them or they can get more money out of a new club that will be saving a transfer fee. Does feel like PSR might decrease transfer activity overall which presumably isn't good for the football economy, will be interesting to see what things look like in a few years.
