If he's doing the right kind of work that's exactly what we need.

I agree to an extent. We need a proper CM for sure, we need bodies in and someone sitting a bit deeper. Having said that, I think it’s wiser to go for a player with proper top quality and technical ability, awareness and vision and not one that is a good “workhorse” alone. A midfielder that has great positional sense and technical ability while also being good defensively is what I’d be looking for, even if that player isn’t the finished article yet. We are quite poor at retaining possession overall, especially in our own third once we have won it back. Bruno is the only one we have who is press resistant and has the technical ability to get out of tight situations. He easily gets very isolated because of this and the opposition often wins the ball back easily and we are back defending deeply again. That is why I would be looking to sign a player more for the long term if we can’t afford the ready one now.

Having said that, I’m basing this on Ederson being more of a workhorse than a technical playmaker from deep. I haven’t seen him to make a judgement on this but iirc I think I’ve read about him. Could be wrong like.

I can't see us buying any midfielder who isn't decent on the ball, we aren't even buying defenders who can't bring the ball out. What we need is a deep lying midfielder who can sit in front of the back four and plug any gaps when we lose possession. We don't really have a specialist no 6 and that was why we showed interest in Phillips I would think. He'd be exactly what we need from a defensive POV anyway.

Going forward we need players that are much more than decent on the ball imho.

They don't have to be Lionel Messi, a DM who can win the ball, spot the runs of the opposition and carry the ball is a decent player. Especially as we don't currently have one.

With the Joelinton news, I don’t think we will let this window pass without a proper addition to our midfield. Not only is the Longstaff + Miley combo not functional, any injury or suspension for any of the current 3 and we would probably see Trippier or Almiron as temporary midfielders.

Is this a concrete link? Or have journos just chucked our name lazily into the hat as normal?

It seems like any concrete link is always we have had a bid accepted is the first we hear of it from overseas players.

Messi…

Well i wouldnt say no to a good player. I just seem to prefer a midfielder that is better than decent on the ball. We have to be thinking more long term and to become a top side we need better ability on the ball, I think it’s been pretty obvious overall when it comes to our midfield. As the board has said we really need to get most transfers spot on because we can’t afford too many mistakes. So long term I don’t see the point in signing  a player that isn’t more than decent on the ball. We have enough of that already. (When fit)

And also break FFP in the process and end up with a 10-12 point deduction

I can't remember where I read the link, but after a bit of YouTube scouting I remember thinking "he's the Joelinton replacement." He's the same build but a lot more skillful.

Saibari at PSV.

Depends what you mean by more than decent. N'Golo Kante for example, would you have said no to him?

Looks a good player from what I’ve seen. Would also give us some depth to play into when playing balls forward to break lines. Has ball carrying ability. As of now Isak has to come way too deep at times. Gap is too big at times centrally in transitions. Both going forward and defensively. Need some playing angles and someone that offers us an outlet once we win the ball in our third. Too flat now.

Are you being serious now? Kante was one of the better midfielders around at what he did and offered. He was also very good on the ball and very rarely lost it. He might not have been the most most progressive or “magical” player but he was very good overall as well as composed. He was far far from being only a workhorse and running around without the ball.

Random source but https://africasoccer.com/newcastle-continues-monitoring-ismael-saibari-in-the-africa-cup-of-nations/

PSV fans see him as their next big thing!

Really like the look of him. The type of player I’d like to see. Even if he isn’t defensive minded.

This is more of a scout report video than a compilation, on how he would fit in at Man Utd.

If you Google the player you will see he has been linked with us by random sources for about 2 months now.

The DM position isn't restricted to only players who can tackle and run around a bit, the best teams have good players who are not only great defensively, but also very good with the ball at their feet as well. I'm sort of assuming any player we are looking at is going to be a good footballer by default since Howe needs those to play a possession game. When someone describes one of our targets as a workhorse, I just assume that means he works hard, has a good engine etc, not that he's a shit footballer. I think we are well beyond buying those.

What makes me laugh about all these transfers is the loyalty bonus they all pick up when they move, if he has any sense he should just tell City take the loyalty bonus out of the loan fee and give it up if he get a loan to perm move.
