STM
We need to learn our lesson about selling players when we get the offers. We kept Trippier and Wilson last January and both were mistakes IMO (hindsight perhaps). We could have sold miggy in the summer and opted against it because the offer was low. If we get offers for Willock or Longstaff in January, we need to seriously consider selling them. We shouldnt sell both because we would leave ourselves too short, but sell one and we can manage 4 month's with 5 CMs IMO. They are both a little different. Willock is the better player but has injury problems and slightly inconsistent. If we get to the end of summer 2025 and we have sold both, we will have done well, again not because I dislike either player but because we need to evolve. Who do we replace them with? Look at what Palace did with Adam Wharton, Villa with Morgan Rodgers, Spurs with Archie Gray. All different profiles, of course, but players with big futures, who have been scouted in the championship. I'd like to see a higher turn over of players this summer in particular. cubaricho
Such short memories on here. This time last year we were down to starting a 17 year old in midfield and y’all are trying to thin the squad out before another European campaign next year. We’re going to need all the numbers we can get, not move on people like Longstaff.

Sibierski
4 hours ago, WilliamPS said: Be a bananas move by Howe if Longstaff left in January. Willock has constant injury issues, Joelinton also picks up muscle injuries regularly. Joelinton, Bruno and Tonali pick up yellows like I pick up quality street. At the very least it would certainly end up with 3 CMs having to play full 90 minutes with no sub options, more likely it would involve some sort of emergency cover when 2 or 3 were out, all for a tiny sum. Longstaff should be given an extension, he works hard, follows team instructions and despite what some think is a decent PL midfielder, he’s pretty much the ideal squad backup. Been over this before in previous windows. If a sale is there for a player, sell them. Don't keep them in case the worse happens, as we then miss out on valuable money and we end up like we are currently with Almiron, Wilson etc.

Longstaff I'd wait until the Summer unless it's a ridiculous offer. I've heard rumours of Leeds being g interested if they come up as they were last season as well

It's not hindsight either, was saying this last January.

ponsaelius
If clubs are putting any kind of decent money on the table for pre-takeover players we have to start snapping hands off when it happens. And I say that with a heavy heart for somebody like Longstaff who in another world I'd happily have around as 5th/6th choice midfielder because in modern football it's genuinely nice to have local lads in and amongst the team to retain a sense of identity. However PSR means there is almost no sense in that type of squad building anymore. You have to cash in on players at the right time.
Holloway
Aye, you'd be looking to move on Willock or Longstaff if the proceeds were put towards signing the likes of Dibling

If someone came in for longstaff at £25m it’s an easy sell, but I really doubt you get that, if it’s £10m then what do you do in the summer? Buy a CM for more than recouped and probably on higher wages. That doesn’t solve PSR issues in the long term. (If there’s someone in the youth setup fair enough, but as far as I know there isn’t.) Have to look at each player in the squad and understand their value to the club vs their value in the market. For me longstaffs squad value is higher than his transfer value below a £20m odd bid. Ideally not. But some players might be difficult to move on later. The opportunity might not come next window.
Kanj
I think Longstaff is the right move in Jan or Summer. I personally do not want to him to go, as I agree with @ponsaelius about retaining that local identity, and in addition to that, I think having hat local core is also good for the squad as well (our local lads like Long and Burn are actually leaders in the dressing room). I see Miley slotting into Longstaff’s role. I think you’d move Willock on if the offer was too good to turn down, but you keep him until you sign a quality attacking mid who offers his dribbling / ball carrying ability. Again, I’d prefer to keep Willock long term too but we do need to trade to use the money we have.

I think realistically someone would lowball us with 15m for Longstaff, which we wouldn't entertain, i think we would sell at 20 though. The key to it all is actually Lewis Miley. With Miley we've effectively saved a replacement. We'd have to replace Miley (in squad status) but for that we go young and see if we can add someone who we can develop long term, like with Osula. rebelrouser
Not selling Almiron was a mistake as would be failing to sell Longstaff if we get a decent offer. Especially if it gives us the freedom to buy a new RW. Would like to see Miley get more minutes too.
SteV
To be honest, come the summer it’s getting to decision time with Willock. He’ll have two years left on his contract so you have to decide you either want to keep him and start looking at a new contract, or sell before he starts losing value due to contract length. Stifler
With Willock, he’s not going to be the player we need him to be long term. He’s inconsistent, and he’s injury prone. I was surprised to see that Hayden is still on our books, so we should be looking to sell him as well, even if it means we have to pay his wages until his contract runs out in the summer. Money has never been the question brother, it’s the PSR distance from the edge into having to sell someone and our commercial income and player sale income needs to improve so we can spend the money. It’s been said before that the Guehi deal = selling someone big in the summer. Edited 6 hours ago by Kanj
