Lovely, another player not fit to start for a top 6 side added to the squad. Sick of us buying plodders who will be decent for the squad depth rather than having multiple players who can play top 6 football fighting for places and pushing others on.

Exploring a cut-price deal for a quality Premier League player, when our alternative in that position is a teenager still finding his boots, isn’t the damning indictment of our transfer policy some are making it out to be ffs.

When has he been quality? i see him as somebody who is outshone by Gueye who showed he wasnt good enough at the top level and is in his late 30s

So are we are looking at top 6 quality in some areas, just others we are not? Do you think maybe priority position areas like RW & ST we were looking at top 6 quality players (Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Mbuemo etc) which come at a premium, meaning other areas that aren't a big of a priority we don't/can't spend as much and thus the quality of player drops?

 

That is of course if we even are after Garner.

No we bid 36.5m for DCL to be the next in line then rejected him on a free and this was endemic of the view we had. That was first choice in a summer we spent messing about and in-fighting. We could have landed one of the 2 you mentioned in that window but again internal circumstances caused the issues and we fought for a player we were never getting (despite for 2 nights it looking like there was a breakthrough). Our main target for a goalkeeper was in the Championship over 2 others offered by very good agents.

 

I have no doubt there are some gems out there but we cant keep looking for them. Our best players have all come from abroad yet we still want to shop in the bargain bin here

Thiaw has been a bargain from abroad like. Plenty of potential in Woltemade too.

Yep hes this years example, as in my opinion price wise was Bruno and Botman. Tonali was a few million more than Ramsey

Goals don't magically happen no matter what someone's record says.

 

We have severe issues with not only creating chances but simply maintaining possession and pressure.

 

If that doesn't change you can sign a dozen guys with good goalscoring records and you still won't score goals because the team is never in the position to do it.

I think it’s more likely to be someone like Kees Smit who’s been linked today. If we want to bridge this gap we need to take a gamble on young players with a potentially very high ceiling.

We need what i have always called "the bar table footballer" - moves left to right seemlessly , receives and plays the ball forward. Michael Carrick being the prime example

He’s no Tonali or Bruno, but right now he’s sharper than the rest. Are we really hoping for a bargain that can leapfrog those two?

Gave up getting wound up by transfers a long time ago and it’s probably yet more fabricated nonsense but is he better than Longstaff, is Ramsey better than Willock?

 

If the answer is yes then the squad is improved and if not then the people making those judgments will eventually lose their jobs. 
 

There are loads of posts in various threads complaining about the drop off when first teamers aren’t available and the lack of rotation. Only to see bedlam when we’re linked with a fairly cheap option that would help with that.

No but id expect us to be looking for a player who can consistently challenge them and step in with zero drop off. Right now the drop off is considerable and i dont think we have closed it nor attempted to close it with the players we have gone for. Even bringing in mcTominay would have been a better attempt as he has played well in the Champions League, if we are buying players without that experience its a bigger gamble than having a player who hasnt played in England

If McTominay is looking for a new club, we probably won't be on his shortlist. I think the recruitment team is looking for the best available realistic options, and signing Garner in the summer or for about 10m in January makes sense. Most Everton fans rate him highly, and his versatility, being able to cover the fullback positions, is a big plus (no more Burn at LB).
