To discount him against Arsenal at home the first time round is ludicrous. He's brilliant but needs others to step up. Enjoy him while he's here instead of analysing his every move (that's more aimed at others than LFEE). He'll beast most, if not all, of the visitors to SJP. Kanj
You wonder what he’s capable of if he did end up going to an 8 position or if he had another Tonali quality player to his left.

That will cat h up with us later on in the Autumn as they reach 5 and maybe 10 before Xmas. Yeah we got a chasing tonight but some of the cards so far have been either soft/thick Longstaff recently-ish back from injury, Willock coming back from injury, Anderson deserving more playtime, Miley eager to pounce at the chance of an opportunity. We have a squad now. Would be good to get to use it. Not concerned about yellows at all tbh. More worried about long term injuries.
Irish Paul
As others have said, it would have been great to have ASM for the last 20 of that and every other game. Hard not to wonder if our seemingly slavish observance of FFP rules is necessary when you look at City, over 100 charges against them and they're ploughing on regardless, having the time of their lives. Have they lost since the charges have been announced?
Stottie
Shit game for the neutral, but a contest where we were a lucky bounce or flash of inspiration from getting a point at the Etihad right up to the last whistle. Limiting them to one goal is a big achievement for where we're coming from. In non-away games last season, Man City got fewer xG than yesterday against only Dortmund and Inter in the CL, and a end of season dead rubber against Chelsea. Given how little control we had in midfield and how many physical challenges we seemed to lose, the lads at the back did well and Pope had little to do bar pick out that worldie. If we are to do as well this season, our defence will have to work as well again, and on that evidence it looked pretty good. On the non-defensive side, Joelinton wasn't himself, Miggy showed his limitations and Gordon had little LB (or Joelinton) support. We struggled to get on the ball, again losing physical challenges, and were sloppy with it when we did have it. We didn't win a single corner, so there's another route to goal cut of right there. That's the hardest fixture of the season out of the way, so let's move on and get back into it next week.
Paulinho
The lack of a specialist defensive midfielder will cost us against the best sides. This fluid, interchangeable three sounds nice but it’s not what any elite side does. And loads have already said it but yeah - Gordon, Miggy and Barnes aren’t creative players and are never going to shift momentum against the better sides. We will miss ASM plenty this season. #HoweOut etc
PauloGeordio
From The Mag: No need for the panic and criticism after Manchester City 1 Newcastle 0 A single defeat at the hands of the best team in world football, ending Manchester City 1 Newcastle 0, yet it sends some of our fans and certain pundits crazy. Quotes of ‘Miggy has returned to his former self’, ‘Tonali not good enough!‘ The hard facts will tell you that Man City will likely do this to every team they play. They look unstoppable and I truly believe Newcastle could well be one of their hardest opponents they play this season. To single out any one of our players tonight is criminal, the bulk of this team delivering us loyal fans Champions League football for the first time in 20 years, we should cherish this team. To criticise Tonali is nonsense, a young Italian player new to the PL, not to mention a huge move in his personal life. Write any of these players off at your peril, they are being coached by Eddie Howe. I had hoped pundits and fans alike would have learned their lesson… Joelinton, Longstaff, Murphy etc etc. Any team coming up against this Man City team will have to be perfect and hope City drop off slightly. Newcastle were not at their best tonight but still looked more than capable up against the best team in the world. For what reason Newcastle were not at their best, we don’t fully know, although I am fairly certain the majority of the reason was thanks to our opponents. Expectations are rightly high but our fans must trust the building process of this club, we aren’t Man City, nor do we want to be Man City, they have shown anything is possible when you have a net spend of £2bn in 15 years and face 115 charges for breaking Financial Fair Play rules but under the leadership of our owners and the likes of Dan Ashworth and a coach in Eddie Howe, I am almost certain Newcastle’s rise will be much steadier working within FFP rules and nurturing homegrown / young talent. Enjoy the ride! Next!

I did say Arsenal at home he did but added the caveat they were under strength. They had a few key injuries including in midfield if I recall. He is very good. I wonder if the step up required is Joelinton in these type of games. His passing game which is probably the main weakness in his game now that he’s a midfielder sticks out for me when ball retention is so important in tight spaces or high paced moments. Actually thought Bruno (and Tonali) had a canny game and it was a shame he fluffed that chance. This was only ever a comment about levels. Which I agree with he/they will be great against most teams hopefully. I’ve just never seen him at Real Madrid’s level and have any fear of him being poached. Nor should the club which I hope they bear in mind with the current contract negotiations. Yes he deserves a rise/extension but from £125kpw I wouldn’t be going much beyond £175kpw. Lush Vlad
Poor old game for the neutral. But pretty happy with how we played. They only really had two decent chances, the two that Haaland dragged wide. The goal was hardly a sitter. Just quality from Foden and Alvarez. Foden was pretty much the main difference between the teams on the night. Shame we were so toothless the other way and seemed to panic or rush when it came to making a decision in the final third. It’s hard to be mad at someone that grafts so hard. But Almiron was infuriatingly bad when he got time and space. Took the wrong option basically every time. Schar, Botman and Trippier were all top drawer. Were often 1 v 1 against world class players and regularly won their battle. The midfield did well on the whole. Not that we had much possession until late on. Although Joelinton was noticeably bad on the ball. Bruno was everywhere and doesn’t look out of place in games like these. The subs didn’t do enough, for me. Thought they would have given us a bit more go. Wilson was a nuisance. But should be doing a lot better when Rodri passed him the ball. Longstaff looked miles off the pace and couldn’t control the ball. Getting closer. A tight 1-0 loss away to these almost feels like a positive result. Skeletor
So sick of losing this fixture and the loss being so predictable. But we're going in the right direction and in a few years hopefully we can actually turn them over. Don't know how Spurs do it every season whilst being so shit. 80
Had to watch this game in a distracted way, but with that in mind... Felt like a very European game. Hopefully will be taken as an early lesson for how to deal with CL ties. Overall I feel good about how the game went. We went up against the best team in the world and weren't made fools of in the slightest. They clearly felt they had to be at their best to beat us, and had we been a little bit more mature at dealing with this kind of rhythm and being surgical with our chances, we could even have stolen the game. It would have been theft, but that's how you become winners. We aren't good enough to do that yet, but we aren't too far away either. P.S. I wish Miggy had two feet. Tsunami
Probs been mentioned; we looked a bit like we played the occasion and not the match. In the big moments we fluffed our lines, Bruno with his scuffed stud roll set up and Wilson completely messing up what should have been a gifted equaliser with an awful touch. Eddie and his staff will have a very detailed analysis of the game. We have to truly believe we can get something out of these games. Our record away at the top sides is shocking. The Prophet
Other than maybe City, Bruno would be in any other team in the league, he doesn't need to be able to dominate games on his own. Edited August 20, 2023 by The Prophet

Doctor Zaius
Thought we defended really well. Final ball was lacking. You need luck and to make the most of any opportunities away to Man City and we had/did neither. The 3 v 1 chance after Rodri's error was our chance. Anyway, nothing to worry about. The best team in the world just had that bit more quality. Foden was superb. He needs to be a guaranteed starter for England. Seemed to suit playing for centrally. His style was as close to Messi as I've seen from any player with those bursts of brilliance. He just seemed to ignite as soon as he picked up the ball.
