Can anyone post the article ? Would suggest Mitchell the front runner ?

Newcastle will start the interview process for their next sporting director next week with a preference for them to have experience in the Premier League.

Dan Ashworth, who spent two years in the role at St James’ Park, is currently on gardening leave and finding his successor could speed up his departure to Manchester United, with the clubs in negotiations over a deal.

The position at Newcastle is among the most important at the Saudi-owned club, with a key role in the transfer market and working within profit and sustainability regulations (PSR), which is why those with experience in the Premier League are preferred. Recruitment headhunters Odgers Berndtson have been used to find candidates.

Steve Nickson, Newcastle’s head of recruitment, has assumed more responsibility since Ashworth has been on gardening leave and he is expected to be in the running although the process has been described as comprehensive and is certain to have a variety of contenders.

Club sources describe it as a “global search” with nothing ruled in or out and next week’s interviews are unlikely to be the only ones.

Ashworth has been largely successful during his time at Newcastle and leaves sizeable boots to fill. The club have been backed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia giving them huge funds for transfers, although their signings have been within PSR and has seen them play in the Champions League this season. However, the arrival of Sandro Tonali was also on his watch and the Italian is currently serving a ban for betting breaches while at AC Milan.

United stepped up their restructure of the club under their new Ineos co-owners, with Jason Wilcox confirmed as their new technical director. They want to make one appointment above Wilcox in the hierarchy and want Ashworth to fill the role.

nothing new tbh

Well the issue is you have to sell high. Selling Yohan Kebabs for pennies wasn't the one.

Wasn't he like 3m and sold for 20m Cabaye?

Short memories, Sissoko 1.5m sold for 30m. 20 x his value, and in fairness he was shit. We did well there.

In this sort of market now, that strategy wouldn't be so bad, because in fairness to Carr he'd have owners who wouldn't have baulked at Hazard and Aubameyang, the guy didn't just fly to France with no idea, he watched players for years, Tiote was scouted for 4 seasons on and off, he remembered watching Cabaye and recognised his quality in an under 18s tournament for France.

Think Carr did alright with the people he unfortunately worked under, he desperately advised us to sign Aubameyang and Eden Hazard only to be ignored by the idiots running and owning the club, the guy could certainly spot talent.

Good little read here,

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8761341/amp/Super-scout-Graham-Carr-reveals-Newcastle-United.html

you need to scroll past the bits about his son Alan, and you'll get to the truths about him working under Ashley!

Like this litte extract here,

'Mike sometimes called by here with the helicopter. He'd sit where you are, having a slice of toast.

'I learned you had to be positive with Mike, convince him. One of my first dealings with him, I was in North Shields with my wife and was told to be ready for a conference call.

'I panicked, I'd never been on one, I was driving around the coast charging my phone! We started talking about Ben Arfa. Mike had this thing with a 4-4-2, first-team players on £40k a week and understudies on £20k.

'He couldn't understand why we'd want Hatem and Jonas Gutierrez, two left wingers, on £40k. I knew Hatem could be brilliant, so I cut in, 'He's a No 10, actually, and he can cut in from the right'. That was it, done.

'But he had this plan — buy them younger than 25, with sell-on value. If I asked him to spend £10m on a 29-year-old, he'd f***ing laugh at me. Over time, that plan hasn't worked. But I do believe that he meant well.' It certainly worked in 2012 when Carr's signings, under Alan Pardew, finished fifth in the Premier League.

Cabaye was worth at least double what we sold him for. Don't re-write history to pretend that everyone wasn't gutted with the paltry fee we got for him and then having him replaced by Jack Passback.

He was close to the end of his contract, and also wanted that big move. We did ok under the circumstances, of course a bigger fee would have been nice.

I'm not rewriting or pretending shit [emoji38]

The buyers were PSG who were literally throwing money around for fun at that time. The problem was we had JFK as director of football who couldn't even pronounce Cabaye's name. Negotiations were doomed from the start with that idiot.

Not to mention Carr was only involved in securing incoming players and had no involvement with sales, did he? So the fact we royally fucked up in getting full value for Cabaye is irrelevant to this ability to pick out bargains.

As as scout he clearly had good contacts and a cracking eye considering he probably only managed to get Ashley to sign his fifth choice 90% of the time.

Carr with funds would have been brilliant. He was very good without them.

The fact that Ashley had any say in signings is depressing; talking about 4-4-2 and having two left wingers.  He knew nowt about football

I really have no idea about the strengths, weaknesses or relative CVs of any of them but I do trust us to make the right appointment. Which is a pleasant feeling compared to the majority of my time supporting NUFC.

I am somewhat familiar with the achievements of all three as I’ve spent the weekend ill so did research. What we all need is an athletic deep dive on them though

It’ll be Phil Giles or Dougie Freedman in my humble.

IIRC Freedman is off to Man Utd to be their head of recruitment

I can help but feel were going about this all wrong. Why aren't we publically saying we'll take an employee off a rival club before any contact has been made with that club? Why aren't we complaining how people won't just release their contracted employees to us for nothing?  Why are we being discreet, diligent and professional?

Tbf he made a valid point. If he thought HBA was going to play the same position as Jonas, why would he sign another player on the same wages? As a man with no ambition to succeed?

How come Freeman is so highly rated?

Palace's policy of buying top talents in the Champo isn't going to scale for them. It's something we should do mind.

Think we will be better off with this new sporting director anyway. Hopefully it’s someone with the links with talent abroad; pair that with nickson and Howe and we have our golden tickets.

Probably because we're actually serious about it. Unlike Jim Ratcliffe who hasn't realised goods and services require exchange of money at asking price value.

Wonder if it’s done in time for summer, remember the media saying previously it wouldn’t.

I think its more that it won't be done in time to have a substantial impact on our summer activity which will have been planned well in advance. That's not to say they'd just have the new guy sat in an office twiddling his thumbs all summer...

Credited for bringing in the likes of Eze and Olise in the article.

I'm not entirely sure why we enlisted a specialist recruitment company to come up with a shortlist - if it ends up being between Mitchell, Freeman, Pinto and the Benfica guy I feel most of us on here could have come up with at least three of those names [emoji38]

Probably just to protect our employees from flack/bias. Gives more gravitas to the hire and process. Does seem like a bit of a waste of money though!
