We overpaid for Isak, Tino and Hall according to many.

You can overpay and still get it right. It’s very hard to predict. That said, I don’t think prices for any of those guys were that bad. Isak was the biggest gamble after a down year, but his numbers the year prior were elite.

TBF Bramble had all the perfect physical attributes for a CB. He just had no brain. Hopefully Thiaw has one and Eddie can sand his imperfections down into a masterpiece.

If Howe had gotten a hold of 24 year old Bramble I’d feel pretty good about him.

Neither do Burn ,Schar, Murphy etc but they have 2 out of 3 times

We should be upgrading on them not spending £35m for a lesser player

And nether did hall or tino and nobody wanted Alex the rat

They all had the potential too though.  Which is why each of them cost a big premium.

It’s fair to say Ramsdale in particular isn’t of that profile.

We are leaning heavily on Eddie’s ability to elevate.  I don’t think either Gordon or Barnes are too 6 ability wise.  But under Howe they are and each have out performed most top 6 wide players over the last couple of seasons.

With qualifying for the CL we had wanted more Hall, Tino, Tonali, Isak type high ceiling players.  But we are going with high floor players.

Juventus' Kelly is unwatchable...Thiaw is better for sure.

Fair. Like College Dropout said he’s far better in the air so that’s something. Talking myself into liking the deal now but having someone with a bit of recovery pace in our backline would be nice too, I guess.

Disregarding the fee how mad are you, honestly, that you’re losing him? That usually says a lot.

Very much this. I’m sure many will put a positive spin but it’s a very underwhelming and disappointing window. Can’t imagine anyone would have picked these players pre june

Ramsdale once cost £30m, a British record at the time. He has a high ceiling its just whether he can achieve it

If Palace or Bournemouth were signing this guy you lot would be bemoaning the fact we're not in for this kind of player...

I can confidently say I wouldn’t

I'm pretty content with this.  I personally don't think the price is that high given that he is only just 24 and a German international.  He's also not so expensive that we won't be able to sign another first team CB next year which I think we'll have tom.  Just wish we had done this a month ago so he could already be integrated into the team. The price and profile also mean that Schär can still be our starting RCB, as he should be, and Thiaw can be more gradually integrated.

The fact that Howe elevates players isn’t an excuse to buy lesser talents though, especially for inflated money.

What's the point in talking about preferring Guehi or Scalvini though, when neither will end up here?

Thiaw is an upgrade on where Burn and Schar were when Eddie got hold of them. Let's see where Thiaw is in a year. If he sees enough in him then hes done it enough times for me to be OK with it.

A lot if we don't buy another CB but, I repeat, at that price it would have been crazy to refuse... Tonali was the most painful farewell of the last 20 years, no one will cry for Thiaw.
