Brennan Johnson goal scoring record is good for a wide player. I think 35mill in the current market is a good deal for palace.

He's also a poor footballer and deeply unpopular with the fans. Spurs just want him off the books.

It is a relatively low amount but more an indication that "the rest" aren't willing to throw big money at top 6 flops.

I feel like Palace are losing recipes a bit with some of their attacking acquisitions.

Isak got sold for £130m, a price that felt low to fans of NUFC. He’s been utter dogshit

Hindsight is the best Director of Football in the business

Aye very true. At the time I don't recall too many people saying we overpaid for Elanga. On the face of it, and coming off the season he'd just had at Forest it seemed a fair deal.

In hindsight he may well go down as our worst ever signing. He appears to have zero technical ability and no sort of footballing brain either.

If you told me after the takeover in 2021 that Jacob Murphy would still be our 1st choice RW in 2026 I'd have laughed at you, but he's there on merit, and one of those reasons is that Elanga has been so poor.

I’m pretty sure Sesko would have done well here. Almost every player that signs for Man U these days wilts. Their fans and ex-managers love to harp about how close they were to signing the likes of Haaland and Bellingham while we all know they’d be on loan at Oldham at present if they did.

22 years old, new league, had a month out with an injury, only half way through the season...

You mean on here or in the press? You only have to take a look back at this very thread to see that the majority of posters, even those who really rated him, thought we were overpaying.

I've just had a look back to page 119 on this thread when Fabrizio Ramano broke the news. The immediate comments after that are (and I haven't misssed any out);

Fucking hell that feeling of a transfer is back! Like a first sip of a pint after 2 years tee total.

Fucking cooooome on ye dancer!!!

It's fair to say the immediate reaction to him signing was positive, both on here and the outside world I'd say.

"someone sell this to me coz dropping near £60m on Elanga doesn’t excite me at all"

"£55m we must be desperate, thats crazy money for someone who wont even take us to next level"

"I’m not convinced by him and especially not at that price"

"This is a very meh signing for me. Especially for the fee. £55m could get a world class player on the continent"

"55m for Elanga is way too much for a player like him."

"He's not worth £45 million, never mind £60 million. I would certainly hope we have moved on and looking at other options currently"

People were absolutely DESPERATE for a signing at the time, especially a RW. Looking back, it's weird how many good posters got it wrong about him, but I guess we need to give him another season to prove himself.

We paid what you'd expect in the current market...

Bynoe- Gittens went for £52 million.

Kudus went for £55 million.

Madueke went for £52 million.

Monaco were allegedly quoting £60 million plus for Akliouche.

The market inflation is mental.

Kudus would have been a way better buy.

Spurs fans aren't happy with him. Can't say I've taken too much notice myself, but apparently he's quite lazy and takes far too long to release the ball when he's in possession.

This was mostly down to people being starved for a signing rather than the Elanga news itself tbf.

You could go back through pretty much any signing we've made and find people saying "yes" or "no" and passing their amateur DoF opinion on the price that was paid.

And then either making a load of noise to justify their opinion if they were right or keeping tight lipped if they were wrong, once the player is here.

We paid what we paid for a player who did really well at Forest, he hasn't got off to a very good start here. Maybe he'll never click, maybe he will.

Not every signing will work out here or justify their price tag. That's life.

their top scorer last season with 18 goals and Spurs fans happy to get rid of Johnson?

sound like a bunch of entitled twats

35 mil does make Elanga seem like a massive overpay, can't seem him getting close to 18 goals

It's also the point of discussing things on an internet forum, I guess?

To be fair a lot of that was people's reactions to us signing someone... anyone for the first time in 2 years.

There's a difference between discussing something sensibly, versus the "told you so" hindsight merchants piling in to claim victory if a transfer isn't working out

That's not what the argument was though. He said that the MAJORITY of people on here were against him and thought we were overpaying. Some were but certainly not the majority. We only paid £10m less for Gordon 3 years earlier who hadn't been racking up anywhere near the numbers Elanga had.

Think @bobbydazzlahit the nail on the head when saying hindsight is the best director of football.

I still think that his fellow Countryman spitting the dummy soon after signing has probably had quite a negative effect on his performances as well. As good as our wingers were for Isak, he was also very good for them with his movement, pace and aerial ability.

Was it ever announced what actual injury he had?

Not sure if he's actually injured or if I think we've just taken him out of the firing line for a bit and he's going to come back firing or if we're getting into "they've chopped his dick off lad" territory
