Unsure if there's already a topic with a similar premise to this, but thought it could be interesting to have a thread about the biggest* club rivalries worldwide. Both for just general discussion about club derbies, but perhaps also to share stories of having attend some of the big ones.

Should a similar threads exist, feel free to merge

* The derbies included in the below list have been put on it based on a single "qualifying" factor, which was wheter or not the derby has been considered big enough for Wikipedia to give the derby its own article.

One day I'll probably get bored enough to sort the derbies by nation so it'll be easier to navigate to the right one if anyone for some reason decided to check this list instead of just googling whatever derby they wanted to read about

If anyone here has attended multiple major derbies in different nations, please make a post listing the ones you've been at - if only to figure out which N-O member has attend the largest amount of the world's "biggest" derbies.

Derbies/grudge matches I've attended;

Newcastle v sunderland (no introduction needed)

Rangers v Celtic (underwhelming)

Rangers v Aberdeen (Strong hatred more from the Aberdeen side)

Dundee Utd v Dundee (fans drinking together before and after)

PSV v Ajax (pure vitriol)

PSV v Feyenoord (they don't mind each other tbh)

Darlington v Hartlepool (both grounds, pretty nasty)

Hartlepool v Carlisle (was taken aback by how much they hated each other)

Derby - Forest numerous times, including as an away "fan" at the City Ground. That's basically their us v the mackems. Those games were always super intense. My mates all used to idolise Horacio Carbonari for scoring a worldie in one of those games.

Derby - Leicester. Pretty spicy, not on the level of Forest but way more about it than us v Boro. I saw a 30 something Derby fan attack and old man on the way back to the train station calling him 'Leicester scum' which to this day I credit as one of the main reasons as to why I never went over the top as a football fan. I'll never forget it. The bloke was fine, I just thought it was completely pathetic.

Derby - Leeds used to get fairly heated as well. Something about a bloke called Brian from the olden days.

I went to an Aberdeen V Rangers game when i was working up there and was surprised at that as well

The game was fucking shite, worse than championship standard

It’s on the list and won’t register with many, but the Sydney derbies I’ve been to were actually canny good (and passionate) experiences. The first one was at Sydney FC and the Western Wanderers away end genuinely took me by surprise. It has a bit too much ‘organised fun’ element (though I think they think it is intimidating- in reality organised chants always look forced to me), but it was impressively loud (example below):

I imagine not - a few M&S sausage rolls thrown in either direction early doors but then it'll all settle down.

Been to quite a few old firms. The ones at Ibrox have mainly been without away fans or a few hundred which absolutely kills it.

Went to the cup final at hampden in may and both sets of fans were unreal

Pissed allover our fans in the cup final 2 years ago. Actually depressed me how better they were

Be interesting to see what a derby v the mackems would be like if they come up next season

That cup tie last season there was total meh. Away end was quiet and the whole bubble etc

Think Bournemouth are a bit like Boro when it comes to derbies. Everyone else around them got bigger fish to fry

Not really comparable given we weren’t playing Sunderland in the final.

Surely we didn't need to be playing sunderland for a decent atmosphere. Considering it was nearly quarter of a century since our last cup final...

We had nearly 8 thousand out of a 48k crowd there and we twatted them and the atmosphere still wasn't over clever so wouldn't have been holding me breath if we did get them at wembley

No, but do you not think the atmosphere would have been vastly different if we were?

Whatever you think about derbies, both sets of fans do bounce off each other. It’s why the Old Firm has become utter shite with no / very few away fans.

Was at one of the games last season and it was great. Juan Mata and Douglas Costa to add to it this season

Sydney badly needs a smaller stadium though. Any game across 3 sports I've been at in the Allianz has been 2/3rds full at best.

I don't think it would matter that much. We had a full stand at their end and we didn't really make much noise despite twatting them

At that final Both rangers and celtic had the singers gathered behind the goals where the songs would start but the whole ends were joining in was hardly any quiet spells the whole game. Wasn't the European type of noise either. It was mainly reactive to the game. Think it helps that they don't sing 10000mph and they've got songs that last more than 10 seconds..

The seating/standing disbursement/distribution at Wembley was clearly an issue that affected the atmosphere. Thats something that’s been echoed by other teams that get to finals.

Not sure how you fix that, other than perhaps allowing clubs to allocate certain sections of Wembley to reflect certain areas of their home stadiums.

That would obviously cause holy hell in terms of us distributing tickets, but as we haven’t really got a ‘singing’ section sorted anyway (other than kinda the Strawberry Corner) it’s probably not practical anyway.

Aye, agreed. WSW play home games at Parramatta’s shiny new ground (a stone’s throw from the Olympic Stadium, as well) and that’s usually pretty empty.

I’ve seen football and both rugby codes at the Allianz (or at least in its old form - before some of the shady shite which saw it demolished and replaced with a new stadium which was the same size when there was nothing wrong with the old one), and yep that’s the same.

Definitely. That final at hampden seemed to just be 50/50 both sets of fans. Rather than 30/30 and most the ground corporate shite

I generally think teams in the same town have less of a vitriolic rivalry than teams from different towns that are close to each other.

Everton/Liverpool, Rangers/Celtic etc., they're all going to school with fans of the other team, going to work with them etc. so they develop a tolerance/understanding.

Fans from clubs of neighboring towns it becomes tribal very quickly, e.g. NUFC vs Sunderland, Leeds vs Bradford.

At least that's my take.

I think the Rangers/Celtic same city is probably overridden by rampant religious bigotry, which nowadays people feel like they can’t express unless they happen to be surrounded by like-minded folk in a tribal football setting.

Have followed the Wanderers for a number of years. Such a fantastic football club. Only Australia team to win the Asian Champions League. Got a 0-0 away at Al-Hilal in 2014 to win the two legged final 1-0 on aggregate.

Apart from us, I think the only derbies I'e attended are

Cruz Azul v Club America. (Mexico) This was surprisingly friendly. There were some away fans mixed in, and apart from a minor argument when someone threw some beer, it never kicked off.

Coquimbo v La Serena. (Chile) This was a friendly, but because they'd been in different divisions for a while it was taken quite seriously.

England-Scotland too.

Went to Hibs-Aberdeen and that was a bit spicy, has a bit of history. Quite horribly an Aberdeen fan dressed as a sheep was set on fire after that match and seriously hurt.

I'm not even sure it was that. I think it's more down to the demographic of our season ticket holders as it was them who made up 99% of our crowd in the Cup final.

Our average ST holder is probably around 50 years old these days and it was obvious walking along Wembley way that our support was going to be mainly made up of people of a certain age. This was confirmed once I got inside the concourse where excitement levels appeared low and the atmosphere subdued. It didn't improve once we took our seats. Far more elderly people than I'd seen at my previous 4 Wembley visits, plus Cardiff and the 2 Old Trafford Semis.

Back in the 90s, 2000 when we got there the make up of our support was much different. Groups of mainly young lads. Typically they're the people who generate the atmosphere whilst those in their 50s, 60s, 70s more inclined to sit back and watch the match.

As poor as we were at Wembley I was more disappointed at how easily the Man Utd fans outsung us. I mean they weren't even that good themselves but our end was abysmal.
