Michael Owen looks ahead of schedule in his return from injury, according to his surgeon.

The Newcastle striker is now optimistic he will be back in action up to six weeks before the end of the season after receiving the results of the latest scan on his injured knee.

US specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who operated on Owen in September, rang the England star last week to tell him his knee was in "pristine condition".

And Steadman has given the England star the green light to step up his fitness schedule ahead of a return to first-team training in March.

The news comes as United boss Glenn Roeder insisted Owen's presence at Newcastle is a major selling point as he bids to bring new faces to St James's Park.

"At worst, Michael is on schedule. Potentially, he is ahead of schedule," revealed Roeder. "He got a scan sent over to Dr Steadman in Colorado to have a look at.

"He looked at the scan and is absolutely delighted. The knee is in pristine condition. He gave Michael the good news over the telephone.

"But the news about the scan this week just rubber stamped how Michael feels the knee is itself in terms of stability. He feels good.

"The scan has confirmed that and will have given him great belief."

I hope that he will be back and be even stronger then before

Like Shearer horror injury in 97

Shearer was never the same player after that injury, if you think he came back better you're a mentalist

Was never the same player, but changed and adapted his game brilliantly IMO to fit in with his limitations.

he adpated well i agree, but as an international level player he was neutralised and from that point could only be effective with his back to goal

Every player is not the same after he had long time injuries, but many players have come stronger then ever because of their hunger of playing football again and because  of their will to prove themselfs again

I think this will be the case with Michael

Hopefully

Look at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He didnt play for almost 2 years and now he is playing well.7 goals from 15 games

Scan-tastic News For Michael

NEWCASTLE United fans go into 2007 boosted by the news that Michael Owen's recovery from a serious knee injury remains firmly on course.

The verdict of Dr Richard Steadman - who operated on the Magpies' record signing after he suffered a ruptured cruciate while on World Cup duty with England last summer - is that the striker's knee is in "pristine condition".

Dr Steadman delivered the news in a phone call to Owen from his Colorado base after inspecting the latest scans.

Toon boss Glenn Roeder still refuses to give a date as to when he expects to have the former Liverpool and Real Madrid man back in action.

But he said: "At worst, Michael is on schedule.

"He got a scan sent over to Dr Steadman in Colorado to have a look at. He looked at the scan and is absolutely delighted.

"The knee is in pristine condition. He gave Michael the good news over the telephone.

"The news about the scan this week just rubber-stamped how Michael feels the knee is itself in terms of stability.

"He feels good. The scan has confirmed that and will have given him great belief."

Roeder also believes that Owen can use his current injury absence to hopefully help rid him of any lingering hamstring problems that he suffered earlier in his career.

He added: "Since his hamstring problems in the early days at Liverpool he has never felt he could go flat down on the accelerator.

"This is the opportunity now to investigate that and strengthen that area of his body as well.

"When Michael comes back he will not only have a new knee that is working perfectly well but hopefully have strength back in his hamstring to get back to the searing pace that used to blow you away."

And despite currently being sidelined, Roeder is convinced the presence of Owen at St. James' Park is a great selling point to potential new arrivals in January.

He stressed: "Having Michael Owen at the club is a big bonus.

"It would be my motivation as a player to be at a club where Michael is playing.

"When I got asked to talk to Newcastle as a player one of the factors that inspired me was playing in the same team as Kevin Keegan.

"You cannot have enough good players at a club to attract other good players."

Aye lets rush him back and miss him for another season!

Because you know more about knee reconstructions than the best knee surgeon on the planet...

Great news, absolutely, but when he broke his foot last season, at one point he was scheduled to be back for the end of March.

It's certainly good news but i still don't expect to see him either until very late in the season, or not at all. Not saying i know better, i'm just being cautious. We wouldn't want to rush him back and he could very easily have a setback. Just not getting too excited just yet.

Great news like, but I wouldn't expect too much until August. Owen is notorious for being a slow starter after an injury. His entire game is based on sharpness, and it takes him a good few games to pick that up again.

I honestly think Steadman should be paraded round SJP at HT and given the key to the city.

Agreed.  I bet he loves our club.  If business slows down he just has to wait for the Engish football season to start and he knows a plane load of Newcastle players will be on their way.
