A bit strange the whole thing. How long does it take to get his fitness up? Hes not injured and he has trained for 6 weeks now?

Edit: I see now that Howe says he hasnt trained with the team yet. May be wrong but didnt he say he trained with the team before the break?

Doesn't sound like he is anywhere near close?!  Off the official Twitter:

Quote

Eddie Howe on Yoane Wissa: "He's working well. He's not back training with us yet but he's close. He's working with the sports science team and almost entering a pre-season with them currently. He's done a lot of work, he's looked good and looked better with every session. He's close to training with us but before he gets to there it's difficult to give you a return date."

Like someone else said.  Feels like they're going to bring him back very slowly and close to the AFCON, to perhaps make him not going a bit more palatable.

Think he said he was out running on the grass.

A key date people need to remember for AFCON:

"The deadline for final squads to be submitted is 10 days before the start of the tournament — on December 11"

Once this deadline passes or if DR Congo announce their squad earlier, we will start to see Wissa in squads.

So he’s getting left out the squad then making his first start and getting a hat-trick against the mackems?

This is definitely an attempt to keep him out of DRC's AFCON team, no way he's not ready to come off the bench yet if we actually wanted him to.

We don't particularly have a choice.

No chance we'd be allowed to play him while Congo is at the afcon if hes suddenly fit for us.

Well that's definitely not happening so what are the options? Hall has to start.

We have a real chance down that side if we do.

Would love Wissa to have a surprise spot on the bench, even if just for 15 to give us options

The player has a choice. He can refuse the callup and play all he wants, right?

Of course he has the right to say no, but if he's fit enough and passes on AFCON, it might affect his chances of getting picked for the World Cup.

Big Duncan refused every request from Scotland after the SFA did their best to shafted him.

Of course we can if he's not fit when they declare their squad for the tournament, they can't call him up after it's been submitted.

We would be if we agreed it with Congo.

You’re right in that we can’t go ‘sorry lads, he’s not fit for AFCON’, then just have him starting loads of games whilst the tournament is on. But we can have a conversation with them in the next couple of weeks along the lines of ‘he’s only 70-80% fit at the minute, if he stays with us, we’ll gradually build him up, so he’s flying by the time you need him to get you to the WC in March’.

Obviously, it also needs Wissa to be onboard with that.

When he did it the first reports were he’d be out for a few months. The club said he wouldn’t but he has been so i’m sure they’re aware of when he’ll be fit.

And holding him back so he misses games just so he doesn’t miss games later doesn’t make much sense.

Why would Wissa not want to play at AFCON ?

He probably does but he may be conflicted thinking he wants to repay us for the money we spent.

If he’s bang keen on going, then fair enough, can’t really argue with that, but it would be a massive short-term boost if he offered to duck out of it for us.

One possible reason is that Newcastle was his preferred destination and we ponied up a very expensive package for a striker his age. He then got hurt and hasn't played one single minute and we're already past the midpoint of November? Maybe, just maybe, he decides "I have to contribute this year for Eddie and my new teammates, AFCON may have to go this time around."
