We beat Villa 1-3 away and Qarabag 1-6 away with Woltemade playing the withdrawn role.

He's dropping deeper by instruction and Howe said himself after Qarabag 'he's that creative player we need in that position of the pitch and he never gave the ball away'.

I'm glad at least Howe knows a player and it's not down to some of our lot on here.

He’s dropping deeper because he wasn’t making the grade as a forward, not because of a genius move.

He effectively was a young kid dropped in during a "no available recognised striking option crisis" though wasn't he? Into a new league in a new country and a new role in a new team. He's scored and assisted once every 3 games. I think that's an alreet return.

The price...well that was defined by our desperation and the fact folk know we had plenty money, not on fair market value.

If the his next four months look like the last four, that average will continue to sink

Aye, he should have just slotted straight into our team built around Isak when his only breakthrough season in the Bundesliga was as a second striker in a two-up-top combination and has never been successful by himself up front in senior football.

I don’t hate the lad, but the excuse-making is tiresome.  He’s been pap for some time and is hiding - then he wants to take a low-pressure penalty and does a wee strop when not given it?  Nah, bollocks to that.

It’s not a case of matching Isak’s output - but the lack of hunger he shows in attacking the ball is unbelievable.  I’d just like to see him do the basics.  We didn’t buy him to be a sideways passing midfielder.  It’s a matter of time before he’s suddenly the ball-playing centre half we always needed.

Ridiculously harsh

He's hardly been pap and he’s just had a very good game while getting on the ball loads.

Also didn’t see the strop at all although haven’t seen it back. Just a disagreement between Trippier and Gordon.

He’s just played midfield against a team which would struggle in the English second tier and he looked neat and tidy

I desperately want to be, but the lad isn’t helping himself for me.  He’s dropping deeper and deeper and then whining when his teammates won’t help him pad his stats with a zero-pressure penalty.  Folks are talking about him like he’s a kid from the youth set up foisted into the side due to an injury crisis, rather than the second most expensive signing in our history and Germany’s centre forward.

You keep saying this like he flipped out. Molehill, you now officially a mountain. It isn't that big of deal. I mean, if it is to you that's fine, I just can't see it.

It’s not a particularly big deal, and the problem with writing online is that it reads like I’m angrier than I am.  I’m not angry at all - I’m just perplexed at the defence of the lad and criticism of Gordon.  My view would be the same if agreed penalty taker was Woltemade and Gordon came up and did this.  I do also think that Woltemade hasn’t been fulfilling even the most basic of requirements of being a forward for a while and now I’m meant to be impressed that he doesn’t give the ball away against one of the worst teams I’ve seen us play this decade.

He's been great in the last 4 games in his new role. Don't understand the hate at all

It’s not hate like.  I don’t hate the lad - I want him to do well.   But we didn’t spend that money to get a neat and tidy midfielder, especially when we’re well stocked in that department.

Not having that at all like.

It’s pretty straightforward to work out when a centre forward is hiding - they aren’t finding space and don’t take shots

Hes a lot more than neat and tidy ehen he has teammates converging on goal. He looks best when we play quick passing, thats where he sees and creates what no one else thinks of. He just needs to use it himself more. Every forward player, near every player has had 6 months of Howe training to learn the system. Right now the team doesn’t look like they know it. Wolt has shown enough to know hes a player an will come great if we can balance the side.

I'm with him like. £65M for a striker who doesn't fit our system and is now being reverted to a midfielder is stinky business. We'll have to go in the market for another striker this summer again - do we even have the money for it?

Why is only Woltemade that gets a confidence booster?

Gordon became the first Newcastle player in history to score 4 goals in a European match. Only the second person in history to score 4 in the first half of a CL game. These kind of things will boost his confidence.

He already had a hatrick?

Woltemade has far far more pressure on him to score goals than Gordon does, especially in his debut season with a £69m price tag. You can see that just by the sort of recent media coverage he's started to get vs Gordon who for his own hype has been quite poor the past 2 years.

2 in 2 sounds much better for a player than 1 in 15 or whatever it is, Wolte is currently on.

To me, that matters far more than getting personal niche records.

Like, I say, if anyone can argue an advantage for the team for Gordon getting a 4th over Woltemade getting a consolation 1, then I'd get it, but all I'm reading is niche personal records and some quasi high performance clichés which prove absolutely nothing.

Trippier seems to agree and he's arguably been one of the best captains we've ever had.

I would like to see him attack the penalty box as hard as you're getting into him here [emoji38]

Some folk on here want a team without Nick, Tonali and Howe. Thats why it’s a football forum, some folk couldn’t select a subbuteo team

Agreed!  I hope the lad does.  There’d be no-one happier than me :)

I don’t care if everyone already at the club is there or gone - whatever is best for the club.  I don’t want a team without them.
