Fair enough; 'not a striker,' however you want to define it. You see what I'm getting at. There's no consensus on what he really is but his supposed mismanagement is continually a stick to beat the manager with. And maybe he could've made different choices but it gets way, way over-egged because the player himself just hasn't done enough despite featuring in nearly 50 games.

They were/are used completely differently though. Isak drifted wide and played on the shoulder. All we do is play it into Wolt’s feet and hope he doesn’t get fouled to fuck and does something with it.

Of course, but not really at challenging CBs for long balls.

Because he provides a threat in behind - and there's the issue, Woltemade can't do that because he's slow as fuck

Are you saying Woltemade should be drifting wide and playing on the shoulder?

He's got no pace

Right but that’s a completely different question m8.

Well it's not really, you said no striker looks good in our system and I said Isak looked good in it.

With Osula or Gordon or Isak up front you can play balls behind the defence because they can run onto it or at least press the defence. Nick can't do that as he's really slow

We aren't going to continue to play balls behind the defence if Nick's up front because we know he's not got a chance of winning them so he gets fired passes in the vague direction of his body as that's the only way he's possibly going to be effective. And he can't win headers or hold it with his chest so unless it's hit directly to his feet then he's pretty useless up front

32 games worth of minutes. Approx a dozen in midfield. Subtle.

Exactly, he's had loads of opportunities. Nearly 50 different matches to make a difference; many of them in which he has, more that he hasn't.

There's nothing underhand about what I've said there, and like I keep saying, I do like him; what I totally disagree with is that he's been treated badly or been horribly mismanaged.

Fits a narrative though innit.

I was not. Just about every player at NUFC has improved under his watch, some well beyond the capacity we thought they were capable of.

This season some players have regressed due to age, others because there's massive systemic issues with the team.

Thats fair, but will you also take into consideration that players also may have played over their ability because there was a massive feelgood factor around the club after the takeover?

If Havertz isn't 100% fit for the World Cup, there's a good chance Nick will play against Curacao.

And his odds for the Golden Shoe are certainly very good.

If you're behind the queue to Havertz for the striker spot, it's not exactly a great endorsement of Woltemade's standing at this point tbf.

Potentially, but they sustained it for 3-4 seasons.

Thats debatable. They didn't sustain the same level of overachievance they had during the first one and a half season atleast.

Again why judge Nick base on the plan A ST requirement? Oh yea we must have a fucking great record when playing Gordon and Osula because they can run faster?

Cant you guys be more creative and sensible than this? Putting the blame on Nick as if he is the reason why plan A fails? Is it?

it’s not a coincidence that the Howe In starting XI are the ones that attack Nick most. Fuck off man. Nick should not be the scapegoat

I watched Germany play Ghana in a friendly last month, and Nick yanked one wide he should have scored and hit the crossbar on a header where he also should have scored. I'd not be surprised if Nagelsmann is wondering what the hell happened to his #9 up there by the North Sea.

I feel for Nick. Hope he can put together a good World Cup (I'll go watch Germany play US in Chicago In June for their final warmup). I'll wear my Newcastle shirt and we'll see if he waves and says hi or gives me the old Leslie Chow.

Well there are many reasons for it tbh.

As a striker he was getting dispossessed every time the ball went near him.  Opposition get given so many opportunities to then counter attack, which is a bit of a disaster when everyone has got further forward.

Has been many times when he wouldn't even try and get on the end of crosses, especially ones across the 6 yards box, would be still slowly jogging forward.

We can't really press with him in the team, as couldn't get around quick enough.  Which is important aspect in today's modern game.

Those are the basics, not sure you can build a team with someone who is being dispossessed so often.

That being said, I think with a pre-season we will see a better version of him. His cameo's recently have been more positive.

Since none of us really know anything about him prior to this season and whether or not he's even a striker or a good finisher - good enough to get the goals we would need him to to justify playing that position for us - I went and checked his career stats...

170 apps - 40 goals, 10 of them in German third division.
for context... Bruno G for us
191 apps - 31 goals

It's hardly screaming clinical finisher or goalscorer to me. He's obviously a playmaker, and unless we get a Mo Salah-esque winger to be the main goal source, I don't see how it can possibly work out for him here.
