The Prophet
Thiaw can't have been a rare bright spark this season for the same reasons Ramsey’s excellent spell between February and March is underplayed, while some were unable to just say "well played" when Elanga scored twice at the Nou Camp. The idea that we "wasted £250 million" in the summer is set in stone, can't be having any nuance challanging that narrative.

Elanga played well in the Nou Camp, Ramsay had some good performances for two months. That isn’t £100m well spent for me.

It just means they didn’t get away with it. If we’re evaluating how error prone someone is, we really want to know how many fuckups they make that could cost their team a goal. That first stat I posted is of very limited use, but it’s the fairest one available. A player making one error most games and it always leads to a goal is shirley far worse than a player making 5 errors most games that lead to no goals. All about the context of the errors innit, that's why I asked what the stats actually track. Being error prone is different to committing catastrophic errors. And as long as goals win games, then the errors that lead to goals will be the measure for me. And FWIW I don't really have a strong opinion on Thiaw, to my naked eye he's looked very good at times and also canny weak at times.
El Prontonise
The only time we looked good defensively all season imo, was before he came into the team. Not sure that's a coincidence or not.

That’s my view of him too. I think he’s been ok - he is one of those I hope can be coached into becoming better. I think the lad has talent. But I can’t get onboard when folks say he’s been a success or great.

Not sure that's a coincidence or not. Tonali was playing well at that time ( at least defensively) and the midfield overall wasn't terrible at doing their job defensively (they've been ass in possession all season) Said this a million times but it makes no sense to point out individual performances when the team as a whole has been broken all season long and nothing shows that more than the dogshit job the midfield as a whole have done at covering the defence and forcing them to do way more than a "good" team would. Very convinced no individual defender in the league would look good the way we've been set up this season.

Instead of competing with Villa for players we are likely in the next tier down of Everton now. Didn't have Europe when we bought Isak, Bruno or Trippier. Even Callum Wilson. Salary speaks volumes. We should always be looking for the next Paqueta, Bowen, Olise, Eze, Ait-Nouri etc.

I like Thiaw, he's been good value for money and I think he has a bright future at the club. But you can't sign a CB, have him play 50 games - become much worse defensively and claim that CB has been a success. I don't blame Thiaw for it. But you just can't. VVD was a success because he came in and turned a leaky defence into a strong one immediately. To a lesser extent Dias of yesteryear and Guehi have done that at City. You judge a CB on their overall impact to the defence. I think a GK will go a long way. But I have my doubts about a Thiaw-Botman partnership long-term. Agreed - if we buy a centre forward who moves well and looks like he has potential but doesn’t score goals we wouldn’t claim he was a massive success. That’s my view on Thiaw. He's come in and their defence has improved a level. But honestly, had he not made that mistake and City won the title = successful signing already. Now that he's made the mistake and City probably won't win the title = looks like he will become a success but can't say for sure yet. Mbappe has come in and scored 85 goals for Real Madrid in 100 games. He's not been a success. Edited May 14 by The College Dropout
The Prophet
The structure of the defence is a concern going forward, particularly given how proactive Howe likes his CBs to be. Individually Thiaw has been good though. I actually think he's outperformed expectations given this is his first season in the league, he's played too many games and the amount of covering he's had to do for Trippier.
