Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United (14/12/25)

I only saw about 5 minutes in the first half as I was out but it looked like:

- mackems were primarily concerned with trying to buy a red card rather than play football

- Newcastle seemed the better side but didn't really know how to attack (not unsurprisingly given Howe's style)

This is it. The Derby is their cup final (not saying that in a patronising way), and they get one over us every time now it seems as their attitude towards the game is far different to ours.

It is, and I'd wager a big factor in their good run in league derbies is that it's the be all and end all, they start targeting it weeks in advance, have timed the appointment of multiple new managers around it.  Whereas Newcastle haven't taken that view and ended up with daft red cards (Tiote, Remy) the week before. Or we have had our focus distracted by playing big European fixtures a few days before (Benfica in 2013, Leverkusen this time) which again is a disadvantage.

In and of it's own losing to a solid if unspectacular team (who are still unbeaten at home remember) who this means everything to, after an away European game midweek isn't a disgrace. It wouldn't have caused the same reaction if we had been turning up all season, smashing teams on their own patch and this was a one-off. But it wasn't, we've been awful away from home this season. If anything, this was a chance at a probably undeserved redemption and they STILL didn't have the gumption to either put in a decent performance or scrape a draw. Hopefully we've finally hit rock bottom in terms of our away form, but frankly I doubt it.

I didn’t see an alarming lack of effort. Multiple times in the second half I did see the wrong decisions being made, zero clue what to do with the ball in the final third, weird glances at the bench for instruction and a real lack of poise and dynamism.

We need to beat them at home. It'll be extra sweet if we do. Nick goal please.

If we’re not ahead of them come the next Derby, where it’s a win to move us like 7+ points ahead of them, then our season has been proper shit.

I’d be fine with finishing below them in the league if we’ve lifted the Champions League trophy. Or probably even the FA cup. Maybe even if we retain the League Cup.

Not gonna lie.
