I remember 83/84 season playing City at home. Absolutely mental trying to get into the Gallowgate there was that many outside. Paying on the gate still then too. I got forced under a copper horse and couldn't move. Took my pal Wrighty to drag me out from underneath and he pushed us through the turnstile where the bloke closed it right behind us. A fiver cash got us both in. Tremendous day, 5-0 win, Beardsley fucking imperious but scary as fuck getting in. Aahhh the good old days.

I was sat on the wall at the back of the Leazes corner.

Richard Hill scored for Northampton. Think we nearly signed him, but he went to Watford instead. Trevor Morley also played for them.

Was Graham Carr, father of Alan, managing Northampton back then?

Think Northampton and Preston at home were the 2 FA cup rounds before we went to Spurs in 87?

Couldn’t get in the corner for that one, ended up in the scoreboard. City’s keeper on the receiving end of some of the worst racist chants I’ve heard at sjp. Definitely a low point with the NF flogging their youth paper Bulldog outside the ground (mostly aimed at scruffy teenagers like myself, I was 13 at the time). Could have done with the older lads with some sense knocking the shit out of the NF and setting a good example for the younger lot (took a few years later for the geordies are black and white stuff to make a mark).

Hoddle scored a worldy in that game, remember it being boiling hot as well

One of the best goals I've seen scored at SJP by an opposition player

Correct. Carr was the manager, Hill scored against us (was a lower league goal machine) and we took the lead again a minute later. Preston dispatched comfortably then the craziness of Spurs in February. Unrepeatable days.

I wasn't sure I was recalling it correctly but if so, he scored from about 35 yards out Leazes end. Ridiculous goal.

Indeed. Think it was a swivel volley into top corner

I actually missed the FA cup game between Whitley Bay and PNE at Hillheads despite living 15 minutes away.

Can’t remember why but was told it was interesting day and night in Whitley Bay and surrounding areas.

Maybe at our match at home to Oxford?

Remember having the lip on about how that was going and vowing to support Whitley Bay instead after hearing their result.

Obviously was back for the ZDS cup game the very next game.

(was convinced even then at that age that that was a dive by Mark Stein - pretty in line with it near the back of the Gallowgate)

Mmm, yeah that’s what it says online. I’m going off the 11 vs 11 site. I really can’t remember at the time.

Definitely against QPR came on for Reilly- the Spurs game was his second appearance, again as a sub

Anyone go to the game away at Leicester when we scored late and stayed up under Keegan and their fans came on the pitch at the end and tried to get at the away end?

Aye, absolutely mental day, think a lad had his eye put out with a coin if I remember correctly.

Battles all over the place outside, had to have your wits about you that day.

Was horrendous that game. 84-85 was canny too at Filbert, 1st game of season, IIRC won 3-2. Always a dodgy place to go back then

Sure Davy Mac scored a novelty goal in that match, now what a legend that fella was…mind it was never the most welcoming of venues Leicester was it…

There was no Hopkinson, Woltemade, PIF, Ross Wilson, Trippier (out of form) and Howe so it was a much more enjoyable experience!!!!

2-2 draw Mirandinha and Pingel in the pissing rain. A good game in a miserable season.

Came off the back of Pingels head? Or was that an own goal he scored that I'm thinking of?

Yeah his goal at the leazes end. I think Mirandinha hit the bar as well with the swerviest curviest shot Ive ever seen.

Was that the game that finished a draw with the replay being the Trelford Mills game?

1-1 at Goldstone, Terry Mac screamer equaliser.

Lost replay of course, Peter Ward 0-1.

First ever away game.
