You don't know that - haggling just opens the door.  I do wonder how much PIF slow the process down as they seem to run by committee.  They seem to have to approve everything.

Liverpool won’t have decided this week that they fancy him. If they’re in for him he’s going there not to us,  nothing the club can do

I'm very frustrated but I don't see any evidence we've done anything wrong. Surely the guy's agent would've been shopping him around all the time and has got a bite from a bigger club.

Mate - Romano is in the pocket of these clubs.  If Liverpool were interested the bloke would have said.  We've just arsed about discussing a fee and Iraola has gone - I'll have him and they've gone and got the deal done.

Let's be honest here before we start hoying the toys out, we've probably been played again here, can't really blame the club because one of the cartel decide to scupper another one of our deals. It had to be them bin dippers again though, so frustrating, sick to death of the perpetual victims. I have no doubt they were kicking the can down the road, waiting for a concrete offer from the scousers, this is not on Wilson.

Happens too often to think this isn’t a result of incompetence.

This. We fuck around for weeks on end. Then a bigger club takes a fancy and just offers the full fee up front. Time and time again. This is going to be a bad summer again as they've clearly learned nothing. We'll be down to like 3rd and 4th choice to replace Gordon and Tonali with these fuckers running the show.

Liverpool haven't sat and discussed an offer.  They've just activated the release clause.  We could have done that a week ago.  If Liverpool had then done the same fair enough.  But that's not how it's happened.

The release clause doesn't force the player to come. Would have made no odds

Na you’re right, but it’s annoying that it broke early last week we were close, then bang out of nowhere Liverpool have got the deal done.

I know he’s in America but it hasn’t stopped Liverpool getting the deal sorted.

Come on guys. Activating the clause a week earlier would have done fuck all. Liverpool would have been in their ear the whole time

We didn't fuck around when it came to Bruno, Tonali, Isak. We kept it quiet, we went in quick, paid the fee, and signed the contract. The more we monitor and haggle, you 100% leave the door open to other clubs coming in. It's no one's fault but ours. He wanted to come to us and we agreed terms. We've spent a week thinking how to get out of paying an extra 4.5m.

Not going to apportion blame when we don’t know any proper details but this is proper shit and I hope we’re going to act very quickly on our next targets. Hijacked deals are the absolute worst. Last season we couldn’t bring in any of our first choices, or even second choices. If the same happens again then we do have to question what is going on, when other clubs that are outside the cartel manage to land their targets. This fucking rankles

It is simply not the case that other clubs read a Romano tweet about us being after a player and jump in to sign them.

They have been talking to his agent the whole time, and the holdup in "completing" the deal was simply his agent stalling for time while calling Liverpool to ask if they won't trigger his release clause.

If we had triggered his release clause two weeks earlier, than Liverpool would have just signed him then. There is realistically no way for us to sign any player if one of the "big clubs" has an interest in them, and we are going to get beaten to signings more often than others because we typically go after a better class of player, because we aspire to be one of the "big clubs" ourselves.

If there is incompetence baked into this process it is only because we are targeting good players to begin with, when perhaps we should be aiming lower.
