These guys don't know how to build a brand which has richness, culture and heritage. Put them in charge of Rolex or Marriott or whatever and they'll just reduce prices and commercialise the shit out of everything. Here, have a brand new Rolex watch sponsored by McDonalds.

Ashley's had success by being cheap. The cunt ain't changing what made him a billionaire.

Exactly. You can't buy class.

Apparently you can sell it pretty effectively though.

Pip it happens in America and much worse. Yankees and the Red Sox may be able to get by without it but take a look at the other teams in the league a lot of them have either sold the naming rights or just demolished their old stadiums and built bigger stadiums on the same site and sold the naming rights then and that is just baseball. Go have a read over the NFL and NBA teams stadiums. These clubs have just as much history as Newcastle and still do the exact same thing.

Like RKO said to the fans it will always be SJP but at the same time it can provide some extra revenue for the club.

Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Dodger Stadium, Wrigley Field, Soldiers Field.... All the grounds that have been standing for anywhere near as long as SJP has have kept their original names. I personally can't think of a single comparable example.

If this was a new stadium they were naming this would possibly bother me less. Can't even imagine the shitstorm it would cause if they tried to go and rebrand Fenway

You know why most of America's stadiums are newer. Because they destroyed the old stadiums to make bigger ones so they could get more fans through the gates.

This is a big deal and the fans will never forgive the owner this stupid move, however unlike some here, I believe it's far more important for the team to stay on a good run, amassing as many points as possible, than it is to create a bad feeling around the place because of the name change. Before anyone puts words in my mouth, I'll say it again, this is an unforgivable move. I would have been slightly less sickened had they actually sold the naming rights to some fuckwit who'll have paid them a large sum. The fact that they've put that dogshit brand of theirs on there has nothing to do with showcasing it to potential suitors  They are simply being dishonest and should just admit they are using the club to promote their dogshit brand! If you have potential suitors, you can tell them in the fucking meeting that you're willing to let them have full naming rights ffs! No need to "prove it".

They're such amateur cunts, it makes me laugh

I want nothing to disrupt the harmony though, so we can hopefully sneak into Europe next season, and hopefully someone will buy the club off Ashley and we'll be rid of this shit.

This is just another step, albeit somewhat of a leap, along the road of commercialisation of our club.  It's something that many many sports clubs around the globe are utalizing, so in that sense I'm unfazed.

What may or may not become an irritant is the length of time that the club choose to 'showcase' the commercial opportunities at the stadium through the Sports Direct brand.

Of course, it will always be St. James' Park to me.

Agree with this.  However I couldn't really give a rats ass what other folk call it, there won't be a Newcastle supporter in the world who will follow suit. To all of us it is, and will forever remain St. James' Park

Might be blind hope but if this commercial interest doesn't materialise, could you see them changing it back? They can claim they listened to the fans and learnt from their mistakes etc. Maybe around season ticket renewal time.

Absolutely not. That's one of my biggest problems with this; it'll never go back now, same with the signs up everywhere.

And the only thing that pisses me off too

However

Bottom line is we have a very good system now in place at the club, particularly in player recruitment. If this money is channelled in the right way added to the extra revenue success brings we really could see ourselves as major players in the league again and not just half a season wonders

I understand the history, I really do, but at the end of the day it's about how competitive we are on the pitch!

What would you take

SJP name and finish 8-14 every year

Different name top 6 most years

I'm not saying it will be the defining feature, but it will definately help!

anyone else posting guff like this take note of where this post falls on it's arse

Wouldnt be much of a surprise if in the near future we see us playing in our new red and blue 2nd or 3rd strip with sport direct on the front,

I really don't see how that is overreacting. Ashley has shown he doesn't give a fuck.

oh my god, our fans really are crybabies, we are feeding into the media frenzy.

why are we overeacting over a name change,  the media now are having a field day  "oh the newcastle fans will be incensed and protesting will proceed very soon at the stadium!"

fukking grow up lads, some of our reaction in the forum are just plain embarrassing.  any excuse to throw the toys out of the pram at ashley.

christ going by the fans reaction we are just like kevin keegan.  fuking crybabies get over it.

our shirt sponsers are coming to an end , and together with the stadium's vacancy we can have a huge new influx of commercial interest back into the club,  bringing in more income for new players and player's wages.  We should see this as a positive.

What the press release should have said:

It's Mike Ashley's intent to grow his SD brand overseas and he is using NUFC as a vehicle to achieve this.

Due to a period of success on the pitch there is a positive feeling around the club at the moment. There is also no home game for 4 weeks.

This combination of factors has led Mike to believe now is the most appropriate time to change the name of the stadium with the minimum of backlash from the fans.

And anyway, who gives a fuck what 50,000 Geordies think. There's billions of Chinese and Indians who tune into the Premiership every week and it's their money we want.

Oh and we almost forgot, you've got SD on the front of the shirts from next season.

You have got to be f***ing kidding me right?

Say his not a real fan all you want but fuck me dead he has done everything he can to improve the finances of this club and make sure the club survives longer.

Calm down all ,i know this is touchy subject but this ground will always be known as St James' Park too everyone but the owner and the potential new sponsor and thats far from being a given in this moment in time with the worlds economy going tits up  , its Sports Direct for the short term and tbh cannot see it being anything different anytime soon .The difference with us is that we dont have a new ground like a few other clubs and a sponsor name to go with it but an iconic identity to us and many others so you can change the name but not that we will call it by its new one .

The strips will never change from black and white as nee bugger would buy a red and blue one.

Although having said, the Solero shirt sold well suggesting people will buy any old shite.

true story really... without the the billions of chinese and indians,  the premiership wont have the type of clout to even come close to paying these player's incredible wages.  thats what seperate the brand and the popularity of the 'barclays' premiership and the rest of the other leagues in europe.
