COMMENT ON THIS STORY

ROY KEANE has launched a bizarre attack on Shay Given for playing in every game for Ireland.

Sunderland boss Keane has accused Newcastle’s keeper of constantly picking up caps just to get “a pat on the back”.

Former Republic skipper Keane says Given should not play in every friendly and give other keepers a chance.

Given, 30, will equal Packie Bonner’s 80-cap record for an Ireland keeper when he captains the team in the Euro 2008 qualifier against Slovakia at Croke Park tomorrow night.

But Keane said: “I think players have agendas — certain players come over all the time no matter what.

“Maybe they want to get 50 or 100 caps and a pat on the back for it.

“I think Shay’s one of these ones — he wants to get 200 caps.

“He seems to have played every game, even friendlies. You have other keepers, who travel all the time. Then, when they do play, they’re taken off.

“I’ve always thought, when it comes to the lads who travel all the time, ‘Give them a game’.

“Qualifiers you have to win — but with friendly matches, give the lads who travel a game and don’t be changing them at half-time, give them a full game.”

But ex-Celtic keeper Bonner has leapt to Given’s defence — and praised him for his desire to play every match for the Republic. He said: “Shay is a fantastic ambassador for his country.

“He wants to play for his country and it’s got nothing to do with pats on the back.

“He does not want to relinquish that No 1 shirt and I’m delighted he’s equalling my record.”

Bonner, 46, trained with Given when he was the Ireland goalkeeping coach.

Get over to RTG and no doubt there'll be loads agreeing with him that last week wouldn't have given in a tenth thought never mind a second.

Shay Given doesnt pick the team. The manager does.So if Mr Keane has any problems with Shay,he should talk to the manager.

There is no greater honour in football than representing your national team. It is the pinnacle of a career in the same way that becoming in proffessor in the sciences academically is. What would you say to someone, a physicist say that invents and discovers new things constantly, like Stephen Hawkings, can you stop that and give other people a chance?

No way in hell would that happen. This is something that happens in every walk of life and always will. You work to succeed to your best abilities.

Shay should take a leaf out of Keane's book, call his manager a clueless arsehole and walk out on his country at a World Cup.  That's how to best represent your country.

Exactly - surely its down to the manager to decide if/when to give other squad players a chance, and drop Shay??!!!

Problem is, unlike England or a lot of other countries, the republic dont have the luxury of a massive squad with decent competition for places, unless they can persuade some english or scottish players that they have irish great-grandparents or summit!! So their best players always tend to play the most. It aint Shay's fault if the back up keepers are all sh*te!!!

Owld 'Disco pants' must be telling Royston how to get the supporters (idiots) right on side.

I'll fucking love it if they just miss out on promotion like. Keane talks a lot of sense a lot of the time but Crumpy and Gemmill are spot on. How can you have a go at someone for never missing games for their country. Plus, it's not like he misses many games for us. He's about 6th on our all-time appearances list now iirc.

Shay wants to play every game.  It's probably be the same if the local pub side asked him to play - Model Professional

Aye.

Just as I was saying the other day that Keane seems to be coming across quite well as a manager, he comes out with this rubbish and then had another rant the other day that the 'world class' David Connolly didn't get a call up.

Bet we'll be hearing stories of how Keane has been mis-quoted or whatever in the next few days.  Fucking pikey.

so, what he's saying is, you shouldn't use your best team all the time? you should only use your best team in important games, when they will be expected to gel as if they always play together?

he deserves to manage that shower tbh. match made.

So does this mean in friendly matches, Keane was happy to be left out for clobbers like Kinsella, Holland, Carsley, McAteer, etc?

Exactly, fucking pisses me right off that the majority of Irish people choose to overlook Keane doing this or see him as some sort of fucking hero for it.

All because they're clueless bloody Man U fans.

They'll tell you he was making a statement, trying to get the FAI to change their ways and become more professional. Or that the team McCarthy had put together was a shambles.

Well, if they were, how did they make it through a very tough group without their best player? Or how did they push Spain all the way in the Last 16, only losing on penalties after being much the better side during the game?

Had Keane bothered to stay around and play for his country, I fancy we could have beaten Spain. We'd then have played Korea in the Last 8, and Germany, who we already proved we could match in the group stages, in the semis.

So all Keane's walkout did was probably cost us our best ever World Cup performance, whre we could have actually possibly gotten to the semi finals. Or an outside chance of the final.

But no, Roy had to make his point.

Shay wants a pat on the back? Coming from a guy who tried to martyr himself? Fuck off.

And what change did he bring about with his big statement?

Steve Staunton is the current manager of Ireland.

Fucking says it all.

Stupid fucking cunt, Sunderland is the right place for him.
