If this money is really not coming from the club in anyway then its great, if the club are not spending money on it but getting in revenue from it then its fantastic! A house with planning permission for an extension is worth more than one without, it might just be a way of attracting potential buyers towards the club after two dropped out earlier this year. You could be right there mate, I pointed out a few pages back that this is what Belgravia had planned if they bought the club, I thought maybe they could be the potential financial backer but it would make more sense if the board were doing it to increase the value of the club in case they come back in for talks. Decky Posted April 2, 2007 Share Posted April 2, 2007 I think its great news, we will get money from the hotel etc anyway as i assume they will be owned by NUFC or the company owning them will have to give some sort of cash packet to NUFC for the land. Also the fact that this is happening and isnt costing the club a penny is great, we didnt lose money but we will gain lots of money, sounds good to me. Also you think Freddy wants relegation fighters and shit footballers in a big stadium like that? he will invest heavily into the team over the coming year to improve football here and to get us back into Europe so its good. We may not be able to fill those seats now (who knows?) but we're only a good manager, another Bobby Robson, away from achieving that, just as we're another bad manager away from a relegation dogfight. Apart from the wages we pay I've felt in recent years that the sheer size of our stadium has helped us attract players ahead of teams like Spurs etc. If your stadium is twice the size it's a lot easier to convince foreign players you're a bigger club. If nothing else it could improve our pulling power. The timing is suspicious though, I'm sceptical whether anything'll actually come of this. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

All based upon what amounts to the scantiest of details that have been released by the club. Firstly, there is no planning permission for any of this at the moment, so let's not get carried away just yet, does no-one remember Castle Leazes? Secondly, having a larger stadium is actually a liability, not an asset, if it is empty most weeks! The club's running costs would increase if SJP was extended, now the increase in revenue from the additional seating would dwarf the rise in costs if those seats were full, but if they're not, then it's simply yet more money going out of the club for no return. Thirdly, few people seem to be questioning where the money is coming from. If it is, as the club has stated, being entirely sourced from outside of the club's finances, then this is not necessarily the business coup of the century as some people seem to be saying. People don't give out £300m with no strings attached you know, and the kind of people who have £300m to give out in the first place are about as far from mugs as you can possibly get - if only the same could be said of our own dear chairman - I hardly expect them to have gone into a room with Freddy Shepherd and come out with a bad deal for themselves. Do you!?! If all NUFC come out with from a deal of this scale is 8000 extra seats, then this is the biggest scam of all time. Now before people go off on one, I'm not saying that is what's going to happen, but there is zero mention of any additional revenue streams in the article on the club website. In fact, the only benefit to the club that is even hinted at is the extra seats and the way they describe that, is hardly a cast-iron guarantee, is it! What I'd be expecting is a deal along the lines of what Slugsy and Apisith have mentioned, where the club are partners in a joint venture with their contribution being the land. This could work out as being very beneficial to the club's long-term finances, but it's simply light-years away from that at the moment. What we have at present is a press release, nothing more, nothing less, similar to the one that announced the Casino partnership with MGM: a potentially good and lucrative idea, but only an idea. Until that idea is realised it's worthless and until we know more details about the idea we can't even judge its potential benefit to the club. James Posted April 2, 2007 Share Posted April 2, 2007 Lets have another look at those key words: Funding for the Number 1 St. James' Park project will be completely independent of the football club's revenues. Can't find any loopholes with that statement. Our board are a load of spin-doctors, not a load of liars. Essentially, we have secured (pending planning permission) a stadium expansion that will not cost us, at least not on a level that would bankrupt the club. There needn't be strings attached with this investment. A long enough lease, and I'm thinking 50+ years here, and permission to use the clubs brand is probably all many investors would require.
