Jacqui Oatley will become the first woman to take the microphone for a Premiership game on Saturday. Oatley is already well known to BBC Five Live listeners and now the 32-year-old is crossing over to TV to commentate on Blackburn's trip to Fulham. The move has raised some eyebrows at the Beeb but head of sport Roger Mosey insists the decision is based purely on talent. And Oatley, who took up journalism after a knee injury stopped her playing football, cannot wait for the whistle to blow at Craven Cottage. She said: "After four years in intellectual property, I decided to change career and retrain as a journalist. "It all stemmed from a nasty knee injury which meant I had to give up playing sport so I chose to fill the gap by reporting on it instead. "I started with hospital radio, evening courses, a postgrad in broadcast journalism, Radio Leeds, BBC London and eventually Five Live. "I don't think of it as breaking down barriers for women in sport. I do it for the same reason as any bloke does — I love my football." Commentating for the first time on a game watched by millions would make most people a nervous wreck. But Oatley admits her Match of the Day debut can only be an improvement on her first ever fixture. She added: "I did a non-league game on local radio at short notice so I had little time to prepare. "It was the first game of the season and I hadn't seen most of the players before. Identifying them was something of a challenge. "It makes commentating on Premiership games seem a doddle in comparison." Thoughts? I don't have anything against the lass, i'd just prefer to hear blokes doing the commentary.
