I am hoping that as he appears to be being openly snubbed by Capello, that he wants to prove a point and score some goals in the games that remain for us.

I want him to have the attitude that "my goals will save this club and show the England Manager what I can do".

8 goals in 8 games will have Capello under pressure to include him in the squad.

Some journalists on yesterday's SS1 talk-in on the subject stated that it might not be Owen's form or injury problems that are keeping him out of the squad, but something dismissive he said to the media after his last appearance for England under Capello, a game which had people questioning Capello's tactics and use of substitutions.

owen's form hasn't be good, i think it's 2 goals in 10 games for us now, that for a player who offer's nothing to the team show's he is not mr incredible goalscorer and player that some fan's and certainly pundits think he is

i wouldn't put it past him going to the mls, cos I can't see many premiership offering anything like what owen will want, with his injury record i think he could only get a pay as you play contract

4 in his last 9 starts.

If I remember rightly (I'm sure someone will correct me) Capello picked Owen at Real (for a change) and he scored 4 in a Cup game - he was dropped the next game and hardly played again under Capello. He just doesn't "fancy" little Mikey as those oldie footballers insist on saying. And Owen must know that, the news that Capello was to become England Manager must have been very bad news indeed to him.

Sorry, meant league games.

As for your reaction.   You really hate Owen don't you? lol

You can twist statistics anyway you want, as my post was meant to show.  Fact is Owen is a best finisher and needs to play.

perhaps, but Neesy is absolutely right (for once) Owen hasn't been playing well at all since his goals at the end of the year

I just don't think Owen fits into the system that Capello wants to play. He has said himself that he's playing with a target man (Heskey, Crouch or Bent), with two players in a free role around that striker (Rooney, Gerrard) Owen isn't a target man and he isn't a withdrawn creative striker either. He's a finisher.

All this stuff about form and fitness is a smokescreen hiding a deeper issue.

This is a good sign that Capello can actually make "tough" decisions when it comes to selecting a team that, under other managers and when players were fit, used to select itselfs for better or worse.  Capello has the balls to drop any big name that isn't going to fit into his plan.  I am excited to see what squad gets pulled to WC2010 when England is playing exactly the system that Capello wants.  He's treating this like a club team which is the way it always should have been treated.  Regardless of name/popularity, if you don't fit into the system you don't play.

As for Owen, someone hit the nail on the head when they said that he just doesn't fit into Capello's system.  He might've if he was fit and scoring when Capello took over and worked out his system to include Owen.  That's just not the way it worked out and honestly, it's probably better news for us that Owen isn't in the England frame at the moment.  He'll be trying to get back in so (hopefully) playing his heart out and it's also less matches we have to worry about Owen getting hurt in.

Claiming Bent is a better player than Owen is laughable to be honest. Carry on

Bent has 10 league goals this season, better than Owen, and only 5 behind the premiership's top scorer. Bent hasn't started  nearly as many as Owen either

Is Capello laughable? because he clearly agrees with me. Owen has failed at international level post 98. He's chipped in with a few goals in friendlies but where it matters he hasn't delivered. He's England's 6th choice striker now, and rightfully so

Owen has started 16 games (5 as sub) scored 8

Bent has started 17 games (11 as sub) scored 10

Owen has failed at international level since '98? Serious? He's scored 36 goals since '98 (23 in competitive games).

I think he probably means at a big tournament. As he's been poor in them since then.

As a pundit said recently, if you're 1-0 down in the World Cup 1st knockout round against Argentina, 20 minutes left on the clock, Heskey/Crouch/whoever has been useless and you need to change things up by bringing someone one - would you rather Darren Bent on your bench, or Michael Owen, someone who's scored against the Brazils and Argentina's of this world in and outside of major competitions?

For all Owen's faults (again, I'll be happy to see the back of him in the summer, even if he keeps us up single handedly in the remaining games), he still does have that instinct of being in the right place at the right time that at higher levels sets him apart from run-of-the-mill strikers who are better than him at club level. He'll probably get that one chance in those remaining 20 minutes you desperately want/need. Whether he converts it is another matter, but with all due respect to Darren Bent, he's not international calibre at all, and I wouldn't trust him to do anything against top class defenders who specialise in back pocketing strikers like him in their sleep.

Bent, Defoe, Ashton, Crouch, Davies - they're the sort of strikers who'll not do anything at international level, just number fillers and nothing more. I'd certainly not start with Owen in the England first eleven, but I'd definately have him as a sub because of his experience and the composure he's shown in some of the big games when he's had his chances.

totally agree, owen is totally past it and his england career is rightly finished and is the worst captain I have seen at this club

that's one of the reason's were in the shit, remember the liverpool game, when we we're getting thumped where was owen, if that had been shearer then head's would of rumbled with players in that game

We lost plenty of games with Shearer in the team.
