Solid and no frills as others have pointed out. I didn't realise he was only 28 either. Get him in. Carr down to third in the pecking order for right back. All good news.

we are stuck with Carr,  as nobody apart from the mackems would pay an transfer free and match his wages.

He isn't a player I've ever really rated but would be a good squad player on a free.

As others have said he is exactly the sort of signing that we should have been doing last summer but since the takeover I was hoping for a higher calibre of first teamer.

Which we may still get.

United bid for Geremi

Jun 27 2007

by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

NEWCASTLE United are in talks to bring Cameroon international Geremi to St James’ Park from Chelsea.

That was the word from West London today as things begin to hot up both on and off the field for United.

With Joey Barton and Mark Viduka already in the bag, Sam Allardyce is now clearly concentrating on his defence, with Geremi looking set to join Czech Republic defender David Rozehnal at St James’ Park.

A source close to Chelsea told me today: “Geremi is out of contract at Stamford Bridge and we understand that he is talking to several clubs, including Newcastle United.

“From what we can gather he loved his time up in the North East with Middlesbrough, and Newcastle seem to be favourites for his signature.”

The versatile 28-year-old – his full name is Geremi Sorele Nijtap Fotso – has been a Cameroon international since 1996.

He can operate both in midfield and defence and is equally at home on either flank – a big plus for United boss Allardyce.

Allardyce has always favoured big, strong players and, unlike Emre, Geremi comes into this category.

Indeed while Emre has continually pledged his future to United, I am not certain the Turkish international will still be at St James’ Park at the start of the season.

But Allardyce is obviously hoping Geremi will. Although he began his career as a right-winger, Geremi has played both in midfield and at full-back for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea – and on both sides of the field.

He was part of the Cameroon team which won the Olympic title in 2000 and played for his country in the World Cup two years later. He has played for Paraguay’s Cerro Porteno, Genclerbirligi in Turkey and Real Madrid before moving to Middlesbrough on loan.

And he will be remembered by United fans for grabbing the only goal of the game with a header on the night Middlesbrough beat Sir Bobby Robson’s side at the Riverside Stadium in March 2003.

He was Middlesbrough’s Player of the Season that year and in the summer Claudio Ranieri paid Real Madrid £6m to take him to Stamford Bridge.

Geremi was not a Mourinho regular last season but at the same time he still figured 28 times, including coming on as substitute in the Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat by Liverpool at Anfield on May 1.

If Geremi does sign for United the ticket office will find themselves under pressure because he has 17 brothers and a sister.

Quoted in full incase the direct link is still slow.

NUFC.com reporting that he is at the training ground for talks, etc.

Geremi in Toon

Chelsea's Cameroon international midfielder/ defender Geremi is reported as currently being at Newcastle's training ground for talks over a free transfer move.

There had been recent speculation that the 28 year-old could swap Stamford Bridge for a second stint at the Riverside - having played season 2002/03 for the Smoggies when on loan from Real Madrid.

another unambitious signing if you ask me, that is unless he is alright with being merely a squad player. butt is a bette dcm and nobby a better rb.

Nobby a better right-back???

You keep telling yourself that.

Nobby was only applauded so much last year due to carr's wothlessness. Let's not fool ourselves Nobby was very average and didn't instill much confidence at all.

i will keep telling both myself and you that ;-)

seriously though, nobby may not be a great right back, but neither is geremi!

but as i said, if he is alright with being a squad player, not guarenteed a place in the starting 11, it is a decent deal. it is, however, extremely important that we do not end up paying him silly wages just because he is on a free!

Geremi who has played at the best club in Britian over the past 3 years isnt a good right back? Despite playing there most of last season? You better go and tell Jose that.

Geremi would be a very good signing. Very versitile, s*** load of experince, very good at set peices, and he's on a free. What more to people want ffs?

jose publicly criticised him earlier this season for "being geremi" - and from what i've seen he jsut hasn't impressed me all that much at chelsea. decent enough player ,and AS I ALREADY SAID, i wouldn't mind him here as a squad player, but i think we need a better first choice rb than that!

Hope we get him. I wanted him here last summer. I would be absolutely chuffed if we end June having signed Rozenhal, Geremi, Barton and Viduka for a total of £8.8m

Minus Parker who we sold for £7 million.

So would actually be £1.8 million.

Outrageously good business.

And with the Owen compo means we are actually running a £8.2m profit so far.

Not sure it works like that!

Not quite, by all reliable accounts that figure of £10M for Owen that was bandied about was "wide of the mark". I get what you and KaKa are saying though, we seem to be making big strides forward squad-wise and doing it in a conscientious way. Ish nice.

Geremi would please me immensely as well, especially if him and the proposed Beye transfer meant the end of Stephen Carr at this football club. As others have said, a free transfer deal for someone with so much experience and versatility is fucking brilliant when you consider somebody (SP60'sH) was happy to pay £1M for Aaron Hughes to fill a similar sort of role!

Owen compo was nowhere near £10m like the Chronicle stated.
