Skirge
http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcastleunited/chroniclesport/tm_headline=don-8217-t-quit-toon-oba%26method=full%26objectid=19478588%26siteid=50081-name_page.html Don’t quit Toon, Oba Jul 19 2007 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE United great Les Ferdinand says he fully understands Oba Martins’ frustrations at St James’ Park – but has urged him not to quit Tyneside. The Nigerian international blasted home 17 goals last term for United and impressed at times in his first season donning the famous No 9 jersey. Martins’ positional sense often came under fire and, after a controversial no-show at Watford, his future looked bleak. But despite the continued threat of him escaping St James’ Park due to a £13m get-out clause, which will end on August 31 when the transfer window shuts until January, Martins still appears to be unsettled. And with Arsenal monitoring the situation, the African star should stay put – according to Sir Les. He told the Chronicle: “I recommend to Oba to stay at Newcastle. “He had a great season last year for me, and grabbed 17 goals. “Considering how disappointing Newcastle were last year, he still shone. “Now Sam will be looking to tap into Oba and get more out of him.” Martins was pretty much the main man last term with Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi on the sidelines, Alan Shearer retired and only shot-shy strikers Antoine Sibierski and Seppe Rossi for company for large chunks of the campaign. Now with Owen and Shola fit again, not to mention Mark Viduka added to the squad, Ferdinand feels the prospect of sinking down the pecking order may have upset the ex-Inter star. He says: “Oba probably feels at home here and will want to build on it. “People are saying that the combination will be Owen and Viduka. “That has probably put his back up a bit because he was the top scorer last season. “Nobody is mentioning him, and that will hurt, but it’s up to him to come out and make sure he is playing come August 11.” Yet despite the common belief that Allardyce will be pairing two from his pool of strikers that also includes Albert Luque and Andy Carroll, Ferdinand believes you cannot rule out a strike force of three or even FOUR forwards. Sir Les added: “At times people said we couldn’t play Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and Tino Asprilla. “And Kevin Keegan did – sometimes we would play with four, so it can be done. “It didn’t help our defenders much, but it’s great for the fans – and Sam will use that attacking system when he sees fit.”

Cronky
Sir Les has hit the nail on the head. Martins will have to fight to get a game next season, and he knows it. It looks like Viduka and Shola will compete for one place, and Owen and Martins for the other. It's the obvious way of forming striking combinations. With the way Martins was bigging himself up last season, it may be a difficult pill for him to swallow.

LoveItIfWeBeatU
Juve are still interested. Are they though? http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=475029&CPID=8&clid=128&lid=&title=Ranieri+rules+out+Lampard+bid 03/07/07 Ranieri brought Lampard to The Blues while in charge of the West London club and was reportedly chasing him again after taking over at Juventus. However, he is not looking to add any more midfielders over the summer and is instead setting his sights on defensive reinforcements. "We are full in midfield and won't be signing anyone else there," Ranieri said. "Frank is a fantastic player - I know that better than anyone - but the only player we need before the start of the season is a central defender."
