The Chronicle know allsorts. I was walking past St James about a year ago and Alan Oliver walked out of the main entrance closely followed by Shepherd.

They probably don't know as much now that Ashley and Sam are in charge, but they certainly are ITK in some capacity.

And isn't Alan Oliver related to the guy who writes all of Newcastle's official articles, Gary Oliver.... just wondered?

Gary Oliver is no relation to Alan Oliver.  The Chronicle seem to be struggling to get information from within the club now which is a good thing as it may force them to do some proper journalism instead of being fed on shit.

Heinze is not going to Anfield.

Rooney isn't going to Manchester United [/July 04]

Difference is ManU can afford to turn down the bid. Would be shocked if he does end up at Liverpool this summer.

Don't see them selling Heinze to strengthen their rival's defence.

Sam’s £7m defender bidJul 20 2007

by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

NEWCASTLE United have slapped in a £7m bid for a top-class defender as Sam Allardyce continues to try and strengthen his back four.

United have refused to disclose just who their target is but it is likely to be a central defender or left back.

United have been desperate for a left-back for some time now – and that need has become even more urgent.

For the Chronicle can reveal that Celestine Babayaro is in Germany having his groin and hernia problems examined by top specialist Dr Ulrike Mushaweck.

It was Frau Mushaweck who got both Alan Shearer and Steve Harper back on their feet in the last two seasons, but even if she has the same success with Babayaro, the Nigerian international still looks set to miss the start of the season, leaving Big Sam without a recognised left-back.

Reports that Allardyce wants Fulham left-back Franck Queudrue are wide of the mark and in any case the Frenchman is only valued at £3m.

United’s latest bid is twice this amount – the figure that has been bandied around for Manchester United’s Argentinian international left- back Gabriel Heinze.

Allardyce has admitted he is keeping an eye on the Heinze situation and will be aware that Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to let him move to Liverpool.

Big Sam and Fergie are pals, but while Allardyce’s interest in Heinze is bold and ambitious, somehow I just cannot see him coming to St James’ Park with Real Madrid and Barcelona also interested.

But one big-name player who could still do that is Brazilian international Edmilson and his departure from the Nou Camp looks even more likely after Barcelona signed yet another defender yesterday when they paid Real Zaragoza £13.8m for top Argentinian defender Gabriel Milito.

Edmilson, who could well skipper Brazil in the 2010 World Cup, will be out until October or November following his knee operation, but I am told Allardyce would like something sorted out before then.

But I also understand that, after Allardyce travelled to Barcelona at the end of last month and talked to the 30-year-old Brazilian defender, United are in pole position.

Meanwhile, as revealed in the Chronicle yesterday, West Ham are more than keen to give Kieron Dyer the chance to join his former United colleagues Craig Bellamy, Scott Parker and Lee Bowyer at Upton Park.

The Hammers are expected to step up their interest after their midfielder Julien Faubert, for whom they have just paid Bordeaux £6.1m, ruptured his Achilles tendon, which means he will be out for six months.

A switch to East London would give Dyer the chance to move closer to his family, based in his home town of Ipswich.

Whether Dyer goes or not remains to be seen, but it looks as though one player who will be staying at St James’ Park is Obafemi Martins.

Arsene Wenger’s admiration for the Nigerian striker is well known, but it does not look as though Arsenal are going to take advantage of the £13m get-out clause in Martins’ contract.

A potential move to Arsenal would turn any player’s head, but I am told that Martins has buckled down and looks determined to give his all for Allardyce.

Since when has Edmilson captained/been in the frame for the captaincy of Brazil???

He writes such bollocks

Must admit I had a laugh at that. mackems.gif

I'm impressed, Oliver has written a couple of articles today where he hasn't tried to steal the limelight for himself.

There's no "Ameobi told me..."  or "I spoke to a club insider..."

Do you reckon it'll ever get the point where we pick up a ronny and read, "I was at the barbers today, getting a short back and sides, gelled, with comb marks, like a charver, and Dave, my barber, informs me that a mate of a mate, who is a street sweeper for the city council, saw Player X at St. James' Park today, discussing personal terms..."
