Alan Oliver: 'top manager' contact claim?

Recommended Posts

Mort & Ashley are not journalists.

Oliver is.  He is under a professional (and legal) obligation to print the truth, or as close to the truth as he is able to get with available factual information.  He has said he was contacted by a top agent, and has speculated that it may be Lippi or Jose Mourinho.  This isn't an old boy's club.  A nudge and a wink don't suffice.

As his reader, I am expecting one of those two to enter contract negotiations or I am expecting some concrete information as to why they changed their minds.  I am not expecting Harry Redknapp who, as far as I know, is not managed by one of the world's top agents.

It is not acceptable for Oliver to print this story without revealing his sources or following up.  If I was his editor, I would sack him.

Are you personal friends with Alan Oliver?  Because it is the only reason I can imagine for making this personal.  We don't know yet what the outcome will be.  But do you agree that if he lied (and he was not, in fact, contacted by a top agent of a top manager interested in managing Newcastle) then he has to go?

i dont  think that oliver would make up a story that wild. People hjave been speculating that sam wud get the sack for the last 2 months then oliver writes this article and 3 days later sammys sacked.

Either Mr. Anal is lying and sam's sacking is a coincidence - both happening seem quite unlikely

Or Anal is telling the truth.

a possibility is that ananalal oliver heard sam was getting the sack then figured ashley would go for a big name and made up the whole phone call story in hope of after the fact justification. Lets face it why would an agent call up a local journalist for the number of the chairman of a club his client will be managing soon. Why would he have the journalists number but not his future employers? doesnt make sense really

What happens if we appoint Harry Redknapp?

Is Oliver still right?

Redknapp blowing Mort's socks off seems laughable.

That made me emit a hearty chuckle. That phrase is fantastic. Fair play to Oliver for that, at least.

I think Oliver is right now hiding behind his sofa going "What have I done, What have I done" as he made it all up to fill an empty day of news, and never in a million years thought that M&A would be crazy enough to sack Sam.

Now needs a big name to be hired to make his story look true.  :iamatwat:

Depends how much Ashley and Mort rate him ?

He would be their choice.

Not yours, or mine.

What would you then say would be the reason for sacking Sam ? When replacing him with a manager who likes to wheel and deal among the 2m pound johnny average footballers ? You have to accept this, or concede that they genuinely rate Redknapp. The acid test is, how do they back him, rather than the actual choice, because we all have our opinions and they are no different to anybody else in that respect. If they see him as a reasonable manager who will hold our own in the premiership, and don't really back him, and appoint him on that basis, then I'm sorry but you are going to have to accept that their ambitions for the club are also limited, and not so much as the old board.

So - do you think Liverpool etc would appoint Harry Redknapp ? After all, we've listened to people spouting off for ages that the fat bastard was taking the club backwards, lowering standards etc and anybody else would be better ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed this has all happened yesterday, but the fact is that now they have to show their hand now, so we will see what they do.

As always, I will believe they are better when they prove it, and their ambition for the club.

i honestly don't think he could make up lies like that....well he could but wouldn't get them into copy, but he could embellish the truth, build on a simple story..suppose only time will tell

I don't know how to respond here.  Are you clear on the concept of journalism?  You do realize that it isn't supposed to be made up?

So, you are saying that Oliver has to tell his readers who his sources are  mackems.gif

Fantastic.

Good post.

Absolutely no need whatsoever for the bit I've struck out. It adds nothing to your argument and is boring.

Call the striked bit frustration Dave. All the rest is no different to what I've been saying for ages mate.

That was a good post, but Dave is right about the Shepherd bit.

We're in for another interesting few weeks here though, I have to admit that if the next manager isn't reinforced with some "proper" money (no nonsense about the cost of sacking Allardyce, etc. or hiring whoever we get) then I'll start to worry.

For now I still have faith that Ashley will pour money into this club, especially when it's his own man in charge.

Yep, so do i. Which is why i'll worry if he gives all that precious money to an average manager like Harry Redknapp.

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.  This isn't Watergate.  Nobodies lives are at stake, and I doubt anyone's job is either (probably because he MADE IT UP).  I at least want to know the agent's name, if not the person he spoke to.  Especially if we end up appointing Harry Redknapp.

Because I'd be very surprised and interested to learn that Harry Redknapp's agent was "friends with the Jose Mourinho camp".

I wouldn't say average. The bloke has always flown under my radar, but he seems a very well-respected man in the football world.

Like Allardyce before him, I suppose I'd welcome him and hope not to be let down again.

Why are we so sure Harry would leave Portsmouth for us when they are doing better and he seems to be perfectly happy there?
