Science or Fiction? Big Sam's mighty fall from relative grace

. Get the ball to Owen in the box and he will score goals. Thats where he does his work. I remember John Beresford talking in an interview long ago (during his playing days at Newcastle) about Keegan's approach to the game. The main strength our team of entertainers exhibited at the time was off the ball movement. Beresford then said that Keegan always insisted that they make sure there are always 3 options available to the ball carrier to pass to. This required the players to be constantly moving into space, regardless of their positions on the pitch. That's what made us a real force in football at the time, and that's what makes Man Utd and Arsenal what they are. Simple really when you think about it. You're correct in saying that Owen would score shedloads, were he to play in such a team. -
Not enough character or oomph. We need someone with oomph. It's all about oomph rob Seriously

See the thing is... a lot of our fans, and especially on this messageboard, always wonder why we don't have the board which possesses the vision to uncover and employ a gem of a manager, as Arsenal did with Wenger. Granted, Wenger had had a bit more exposure before he moved to Arsenal. But remember, he was brought in from Grampus 8. Many would have thought if he was good enough, he would have been managing in Europe. So why the immediate shooting down of an idea of a man from total obscurity like Martinez?

To be honest the only impact I can remember him having on a major game (including matches against the top four/ champions league knockouts) was scoring a two yard tap in against Arsenal last year... Also created the other Man U goal in that game. Last season he created Man Us winner at Anfield. Created the goal the only time Man U beat Mourinho's Chelsea. Scored twice at Highbury in a 4-2 win. Got MOTM in the FA Cup Final lost against Arsenal. MOTM the game in which Man U broke Arsenals long run Got MOTM in his first game against Liverpool since going to England from Sporting. The Roma games. The problem is if he plays very well but doesnt create or score goals (such as games against the English) people remember it as him playing badly, and if he does score and assist such as at Emirates this season people say he had a poor game apart from that. Incidently, regarding Kaka, of the 10 goals that he scored last season in the Champions League, there were 4 penalties, there was a deflected goal off the defender Zetka when Milan beat Anderlecht 1-0 away (a Lampard goal if you like) and a hattrick against them at home. He was anonymous against Bayern and equally anonymous against Liverpool while the Argentina Mascherano was on the pitch. His only worthwhile contributions were against Celtic and a Man U defence missing their back four. I'd suggest Ronaldo could've made similar contributions agaisnt Milan had their defence been without Oddo, Nesta, Maldini et al. Of the 8 league goals that Kaka scored, 4 were from the penalty spot again and 3 more were against relegated sides Ascoli and Messina. Milan managed just 7 wins in their 19 away games. 18 goals - 8 penalties, 8 goals against Anderlecht / Ascoli/ Messina/ Celtic. Food for thought maybe? Absolutely spot on. Said this for a long time. Kaka is overrated, and only looks good because of the likes of Pirlo, Seedorf and Gattusso. One gets it, finds one of the other two, who in turn gives it him on a f****** plate. Repeat. The same Seedorf who is well renowned for his ability to find the opposition more than anyone on his own team? The same Gattusso who is a midfield destroyer and not in the same league techincally as Kaka and Pirlo? Well, Gattusso would be the one who retrieves the ball and finds Pirlo, whose movement is so superb in midfield, that he's ALWAYS available for an easy pass. He in turn will find Seedorf wherever he may be (easy to spot as well). Seedorf has a great knack for that final ball through, and I refer you to Milan's first goal away at Man U as a prime exhibit A. All Kaka had to do was finish. Obviously I'm not saying Kaka is gash here...he's a world class player. But for me, as an individual, he's nowhere near C Ronaldo.

Joe Lovejoy's a cunt. Redknapp's rejection of our offer leaving us where we deserve to be...in a mess? Cunt

Two of my favourite players. Very irritating news. FS has moved up the Parky hit list confirmed. Is Parky on Parky's hitlist? If he doesn't behave. Yes. That you Mrs. P?

As much as I would have loved Van Gaal here, I feel it's not the right time for him -

With all the good things that could have come with Big Sam's scientific approach to the game, and it certainly felt like our club could use a more "brainy" approach, it's been obvious to all and sundry that this approach itself has proved to be his downfall. When you surrender to data, statistics, monitors, analysts and computers, you are effectively telling the players that they dont know what they are doing better than the computers do. It also sends out a message to them that the bloke managing them doesn't know what he's doing, and needs the computers to tell him. This approach has robbed our players, and ultimately our then manager of their self belief. Whilst we do have a reasonably decent playing staff, in my view anyway, these players didn't perform to their collective potential due to this reason, and this reason alone. Every one of our players has looked short on belief and self confidence. And for all of Allardyce's motivational skills, they were never going to perform having lost faith in their abilities. Big Sam identified the problem up here, but imo used TOO MUCH of the medicine (the science approach), and too little of the love and spiritual approach, and hence ended up making our players feel more like guinea pigs than football players, digging his own managerial grave in the process. Where do you draw the line? -
It fucking hurts!!! Obviously! Especially coming from an annoying cunt like him.....but it doesnt change the fact that he was sensational, and is a top top class player.
-
Sorry...but imo he pisses all over Kaka and Messi. Best player in the world. One word to describe him last night, and that is....sublime

I'd have Shearer over Redknapp. Would breathe life into the whole place. Eloquent and measured, the man is probably thinking, "well i never won anything there as a player, I damn sure am gonna win something as manager".
-
Is your sig a joke? Or do you really think Nesta would come here? Before the start of the season, most football supporters would have described SA as four of those five things. To be fair he was all of those things. Absolutely right. That was why I was thrilled when he first joined. However, his short tenure here was nothing but tame, which is why he ulitmately failed to impress.

Only became a fan since the aged of 14?!? What the hell were you doing in the years previous?! Coinsided with the time we were back in the top flight and one of the better teams! I'm 27 and have been going to games since the 87/88 season. I have seen the s***! I'm not a Geordie and not from Newcastle. Does that give you a clue? Actually became a fan during the promotion season (admittedly it was the black and white stripes, and a female interest that swayed me at the time). Hey if I was a glory hunter, I would have walked long ago

fuck you!!

Still not convinced he is the right man to move us forward. However, there are some positives to take out of such an appointment. Redknapp is a player's manager. He will know more about our players from his top seat at Portsmouth than many other opposing managers. He won't need too long to figure out who he'll want to keep, and who he'll want rid of. Could possibly breathe new life into Emre's toon career, which could only be a good thing as far as creativity is concerned. If he can get him playing like Krancjar, it could be a great thing.
