Poor man's Tevez/Mascherano tbh. To be honest actually, and now that I've given it even more thought, I would be outright livid if we paid any kind of money for SWP, and let Milner go. The only way I'd have SWP here is on loan, and IF and ONLY IF Duff and Zoggy are out longer term, with Milner having to fill in on the left.

If you could have any starting left-back from outside of the top four...

I'd have Ricardo Gardner here as well. Think he's a very good defender, and is superb at going forward. His injuries are a bit of a deterrent though. Leighton Baines is a super footballer, and plays the fullback position as it should be played. I would have every confidence in paying whatever it took to bring him here. I'd go as far up as 7 or 8 million. It's time we did that. See...when you bring players in, you're not only paying for their individual value, but you're also paying for the potential benefits you could gain. I think bringing in a top class fullback (especially at LB now that Nobby's a revelation) would give us SO MUCH more balance in the team, and that alone is worth a lot of money. Baines would strengthen our team as a defender, but would also strengthen our team by bringing balance to our shape. Note how the opposition almost always attack us on our weaker left side (Baba/makeshift rightfooted CB). Big cash on LB for LB is a must this Januray imo if we are to even attempt to push for a European spot, or do well in the cups we're still in. [email protected] -
I also can't stand SWP. Decent footballer no doubt, but nowt special. If he was actually special he'd get into Mourinho's side. Plus, (and I do like Ian Wright), he's a London boy thru and thru, and his father wants him to be at a top title challenging club, and if he does come to us, it will probably be for 14M or something, and he'll be sold to Arsenal a year or two later for 8M on account of him being unhappy up north etc..etc.. Should steer well clear. Milner has the potential to be better than SWP, and he's quite the professional. Milner over SWP every day of the week.

Wasn't that Baia?? Anyways. Shite thread. All topics have been milked on this forum. Let's talk about something new!!
-
Wasn't actually a trick. I think it was he outmuscled 3 Man U defenders, and rolled the ball back to Milner near the touchline (2nd half). The closest thing to a trick was him stepping down hard on the ball to trap it, which deterred the Man U defenders from going near him!

So no one wants Wayne Bridge then?
-
Well to compensate, you can put your house mortgage on that happening though!! Lot of money there to be won.

Who's his agent might I ask?

'ckin hell!! People will just moan about everything! People always complain that our management never try to unearth gems on the cheap. Find our own Rooney or Henry. Roeder wants to try and risk a small amount of cash to bring in a promising young player. Isnt this what people want as opposed to Luque, Owen, Boumsong, Viana signings? Can people start to see this as a positive thing rather than OMFG WE HAVE NO DOSH PROPER FUCKED WE ARE!! Chill

Spot On. When it was obvious that it wasn't working he should have done something about it.

Here's what I saw: Given 7 - His usual self in general. However, after an improvement in distribution lately, he put the ball out too often for me. I like him as captain for now, as none of our outfield players deserve that role. Possibly Butt, but we all know he will be dropped soon for Parker. Hunty 8 - A bit on the high side, but that's to encourage him if he reads this forum tongue.gif Was very decent today, and any errors he made were not fundamental, but could easily be down to home debut nerves. Love the look of him already. Will be a tremendous defender someday. Babayaro ? - Can't mark this fucker, and I'll tell you why!! He was SO BAD at times, that he'd normally get a 3 or 4. However, the good things he did were extremely vital for the win. Some excellent blocks, last ditch clearances, and powerful headers, which saved a situation or two. Extremely inconsistent, and his fullback play is shit. His defending as pure defending isn't bad though. Ramage 7 - Steady all the way. Gritty and with time, attackers won't like playing against him, especially if he fills out in build and adds some maturity to his physical play. Never say die. All you could ask from a decent defender with little ball skills. Taylor 9 - Simply outstanding. The first time I agree with the MOM announced on the SJP tannoy in a long long time. As the commentator said during the game, Taylor loves to defend. His best quality IMO. Dyer 6 - Bar the first few minutes, he wasn't in the game at all. I'm not worried though. Butt 7 - Below par distribution this game. We've seen better in terms of his passing. Gave the ball away a few times. Didn't put a foot wrong anywhere else though. Tackled, harried, blocked, rushed their players, organised our own, wanted to win the game. Purely on performances, he should be our captain on the pitch. Milner 7 - I thought his set pieces and crossing were excellent today. Delivered everything with pace, spin, and into dangerous areas. Both feet as well. You tend to forget how young he still is. Usual ineffective running yet battling performance on the wing. Emre 8 - Growing in stature with every game. Did well despite not being suited to the diamond formation. Needs to be with Butt in the center end of. Hope the injury isn't too bad. Martins 8 - Very good performance yet again. Exremely dangerous. The kind of player that will make defences nervous before playing us, which gives us a slight advantage in the opening minutes of games against weaker opposition. We should capitalise on defenders giving him too much respect. Sib 7 - Worked his socks off. Again, intelligent and composed. Needs a rest imo. Subs: Parker 5 - Only had time for one good tackle, and a few trips into no man's land, allowing their midfield to push on. As lightweight as our midfield was, it got even lighter when he came on. A reassessment of his role in the team is vital as he is a good footballer who is lost at the moment. Duff 6 - I was screaming for him to get on the wing and on the ball. The one time he did, we scored. Apart from that, nowt else. I'd be happy if he defended well, and made one or two telling runs from which we ended up scoring. At the moment, he looks to offer nothing else.

This thread is funny in hindsight indeed. No humble pie here, as I defended his signing from the perspective that he is a good professional who would come in and work hard. Forgot that I'd even posted in this thread!!

This is exactly what is happening. The club statement is a very diplomatic one. Remember when they denied the Belgravia reports, they mentioned the company by name. There is no mention of Polygon or USB in this one though. It's all hanging by a legal technicality imo, and I'm guessing the club (and/or Shepherd) wanted the news to be heard first by the SE, and not leaked through the media. Could well be a final struggle between Doug and Fred.
-
Could be on a technicality....such as receiving the offer in writing, as opposed to something verbally agreed upon. The story seems to have some truth in it....and there's definitely fire where the smoke is rising from. That statment seems to be a lot more carefully worded than the previous ones denying the Belgravia bids, which carried more conviction. A further statement will be made when appropriate? It's a done deal

10 on Crouch The rest on the defence

they always had the UBS backing as far as i remember. i'm not sure about Polygon, some of their previous antics have been a little too off-the-wall for them to gain our trust, but UBS brings a modicum of respectiviely. would be very interesting to see the exact details of Polygon and UBS's relationship. BTW where have the BBC reported this news? UBS no doubt will be in some control over proceedings, if not very much in the mix. It might be good for us to have two sets of people offering opinions and experience, rather than some fat wanker who fought his way out of the school gates come lunch time.    The image!!! Thanks!!
