We don't need him to get promoted. He doesn't want to be here anymore, and other clubs apparently want to pay an inflated price for him, making this more likely than not. Investing his current market value into the squad would increase our longer-term prospects of promotion with players who actually want to be here and fight for promotion. We just need to get the highest price we can for him.

He is a gifted player with a tremendous amount of ability, but aside from the odd goal / assist, contributes little to overall team play. Often requires other players to cover for him when he surrenders possession by running down a blind alley into the opposition's half, jeopardizing the team's shape. We would do well to find a less talented but more efficient player.
