I was watching his runs carefully yesterday to see if some of the moans about him being offside more often than not, the reality is that he makes some exceptional runs and he sees the person receive the ball but more times than not they don't release early enough, cabaye did it a couple of times. He is red hot at the moment, just lady luck is at that time of the month I would say... Benfica, you will suffer !3!!

For one, Haidara didn't travel. Santon has never played on the wing (afaik) either and would be a strange time to try it with 2 full-backs out injured. If Haidara was fit it would be a cool system to try, tbf. It'll be Krul; Simpson, Mapou, Saylor, Santon; Cabaye, Perch; Marveaux, Sissoko, Jonas; Cissé. I agree with the sentiment of keeping Jonas and Simpson out but this is 100% the sort of game Pardew loves Jonas in. Perch will sit deep and break up play. Sissoko will drop deep too with Marveaux sitting forward and Jonas doing a heap of leg work. It'll be all about shutting them out. Spot on there! I think we will battle hard and try to nick a goal (copyright - pards), the outcome will depend on how rattled we can get them and if we get the first goal. portuguese are known for crumbling and fans get nervous pretty quick if goals don't flow...

Problem is that if we funk up again next year and Pardew does get sacked it will be very difficult to hold on to our star players.

The most logical step this summer would be to make an upgrade to our coaching staff, whether it is Pardew himself or his coaching team that lacks that bit extra we will never know. Our squad has improved greatly this year, we add three poiples and that only leaves one glaringly obvious upgrade to be made. I am assuming Mike Ashley will be aware of this, he's been here a few years and has got a grip on it now... Come on fatboy!!!

Backs to the wall fightin' spirit needed tonight, caught this lot at the wrong time as they have a lot of momentum. If we get up and at em' and create a few chances early it might make them a bit more hesitant. I think it's a case of the price that is asked by Liverpool, anything under 8 million quid and it should be looked at as a good piece of business, anything over that and I would genuinely think we could find better quality elswhere. It is a big gamble bringing him back here, he has only shone in his last season with us and then flashes of his best in the Euros, he has done zilch since then...

It's really amazing the difference he makes to the Barca team, last night it was tangibly apparent when he went off the lift PSG had, they then went on to have some good chances and Barca looked pretty ordinary apart from/despite their keep ball politik. If you swapped Messi over to Bayern/Madrid/Manu, he would make such a difference to them that you would automatically assume they would reach semis of champs league... Would be nice to have that luxury...

Even though he's not been playing greatly this season, I felt so sorry for him against ManCiteh, didn't get any service at all and chased down shadows all day due to their defence looking like barcelona when on the ball. I wonder if Pards actually tells him to pressure even thought we are sitting back and waiting for them to come on to us? Maybe he wants to show him up even more than when we are incapable of giving him any decent delivery... who knows... FFS!

The armband is obvious; the extra responsibility to his team means he should think much more and not take risks, lead by example and make sure his teammates also have the right attitude. Might just do it...you never know
