Beye, Faye, and Enrique are the best defenders that club has had since Woodgate left. Well, that's not saying much. But it speaks volumes.

I think that the "Enrique is shit" line was born out of Allardyce starting N'Zogbia in front of him at left back. And that says more about Allardyce than Enrique. Note that the first change that Nigel Pearson made made after Allardyce was sacked was to return Enrique to the starting 11. And Keegan brought in Enrique almost immediately after he had a chance to watch him train and play. Pretty obvious to anyone who actually bothers to watch him (Allardyce excepted), that he's class. Edit: But, then, Allardyce did buy him didn't he.

The Guardian comment about Enrique being a weak link irked me as well. It was Louise Taylor (or Marina Hyde?) who made a comment back when N'Zogbia was starting -- about Enrique being a bust. It's an idée fixe and she (they) hasn't really bothered watching him play. Just mouthing received wisdom. At one point last week Enrique made a brilliant play where he sort of flicked the ball to himself over a defender -- and the commentator remarked that he had lost the ball and recovered. To me it was manifestly obvious that Enrique knew exactly what he was doing and did it quite deftly. I guess left backs aren't supposed to know how to dribble.

I AM NOT DEFENDING SOUNESS. But those talking about the "quality side" we had before his arrival are forgetting that Woodgate had already been sold. Without Woodgate in the lineup we were a mediocre side. When he wasn't injured we were Champions League calibre. Our backline: Hughes, Bramble, O'Brien, Bernard. Shit. Boumsong was actually an improvement. An expensive and crappy upgrade, but an improvement none-the-less. Souness: poor management, poor purchases. Hands down the worst. Losing Woodgate and Speed were just as bad-- if not worse-- than losing Bellamy.
