I feel for the young modern fan in a lot of ways, not getting to experience that and only knowing mostly sterile atmospheres and stupid prices. Even though we were largely shit on the pitch, I still treasure the memories of following them in the 80s and being part of large standing crowds. It wasn't always particularly safe (Spurs in the cup in 87 stands out, 15k away fans) but it was unforgettable.

100% right. I remember being at Goodison, Easter 87, they were basically crowned champions that day (Liverpool lost at Man Utd same day) and twatted us 3 nowt. Didn't matter, the Toon fans made it a point of pride that even though we got scudded on the pitch, we were not going to be second best off it. One of the best away atmospheres i've ever been a part of, out-sang 45k Everton fans and it came in a rotten defeat. Different days.
