It is easier to believe a figure widely reported at the time, in particular by the more reliable broadsheets at a time when they would have consulted their best sources on this, whereas now there has obviously been no research, and no sources as negotiations haven't started, and our lot are a secretive bunch. I'm not saying £80k is definitive, but given the historical reporting of Owen's wage, it is certainly between £80k-£100k and nowhere near the £120k mentioned recently. So your reasoning is: don't believe the papers now, believe them 3 years ago? My belief is that they are more likely to get their facts right at the time, than they are in the future. Very few sports journalists thoroughly research their articles, for what they write today is fish and chip paper tommorrow. is that you alan?

crouch although not great with his head, neither is viduka. what he does have in common with him is great close control and the ability to take the ball out of the air and bring others into play, and bags of skill which he uses to confuse players, and he can do all of this quicker than viduka. he also scores a couple of screamers a season. he's much more mobile than the fat aussie and he shares a great knack of finishing, i actually think his finishing has been better than dukes this season, whats more impressive is he's had to it all from the bench. his attitide can never be questioned and i believe he's got a decent fitness record so far?

we were shit today only danger came from zoggy, duff was AWFUL. atmosphere was good though, nice of the everton fans to clap us out. cant help but feel it would've been different if we'd won though. thats all i can be arsed to type coz MOTD is starting. roll on next season. -
pretty much identical to the early reports about modric. lots of clubs interested, newcastle the first to put in a solid offer.

If anybody is interested in a good read try here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magnificent-Obsession-Keegan-Newcastle-Million/dp/074753750X just ordered it, looks good. just about to start reading his autobiography, got it in hmv for 2 quid if anyone fancies it. by the way, am i the only one who likes the look of this? “I’m looking forward to the next three years – at least. I’ll only be 60 then.” i've always wished his contract was 5 years tbh

lets hope his little speech did the trick, whenever the talks are held

Sorry but I would see 5th any time in the next 3 years a being very positive and that is the target Keegan has set himself for next season. so would i, i've already stated i'd be delighted with 7th next season, never mind 5th, i'd be pleased with top 8 and satisfied with top 10 ffs! i just think that there are other, less negative things he could've said to take the pressure off the players then 'it is impossible for newcastle united to qualify for the champions league in the next three years'. realistic or not. edit - i'd like to add to this that i think kk will know there are other things he could have said too, which is why imo its a money issue making him say it.
-
I think he was trying to reduce expectations any by doing so take pressure off the players next season, I also think he felt that we were put to the sword by a very good team who we will need to challenge in future if we're ever going to win something. fair comment about trying to take pressure off the players, i think it could have been achieved without being SO negative though, but whats done is done.
-
Maybe you don't believe it for a second but we've been struggling in the past and still signed players who have improved us, the fact that Keegan has been a realist will not change how we do in future. i really hope you're right. i trust kk, and i also give him more credit than others might when it comes to dealing with the media. imo he's taken a gamble to try and get super cash out of the board, we all know he hates second best.
-
no we're not. we're asking him not to publicly make negative statements that just state the obvious, is that ok?
-
erm, nothing? Quite, no need to make comments that the press can jump on so easily. struggling to see the point of it tbh, i love him as much as the next man but he's not above criticism. i can only think he's trying to get a point across to somebody, looks like a bit of gamble to me though because he has been rather negative about our chances in the league, realistic yes, but he could've certainly been more optimistic in what he said.

So KK saying they haven't entered negotiations means what then? I only remember Keegan saying that he wanted Owen to stay. Did Keegan actually say Owen and Newcastle haven't started talking yet? Yes. Any evidence of that? *tin hat on* I know this will annoy some, but I could see a situation where things were so far apart in the initial discussions that it had to be put on the backburner till the end of the season? So although they could all say "we haven't started talking" there could still be a situation. Look, I just think it would be very difficult to determine what to pay Owen at the moment. We clearly didn't get value for money the first time around due to his injuries and in all honestly his first contract was a disaster for us. He was supposed to help fire us into Europe so the investment would be worthwhile, but it didn't happen. We really can't guarantee he will stay fit from now on, and in fact, judging from his history he will likely be injured again before long. If we gave him a new contract and he did get seriously injured yet again how would we all feel about it? Honestly? I really don't know what the club should do here. It is a very tough call in my opinion. i'm not gonna dispute any of that, i guess it comes down to the quality of player we can get to the club if we decide not to renew.
