I liked him too. Me too. Remember that was one of my main annoyances with the club/manager back then that SBR very rarely used him properly, but shoehorned him out on the left wing instead. I much more preferred Dyer on the right wing ahead of Bowyer/Ambrose/Solano with his pace and dribbling to make space in the middle for Viana.

Manquillo started playing on the left in a back 4. I think everyone saw an improvement when he was moved to right back, and even more improvement when Rafa changed the system to a back 5 with wing backs. Diame started as a replacement for Sissoko in an offensive midfield role. When Rafa again tweaked the system and gave him a more defensive role he is more suited to he "became good". I think Krafth would probably do better if we reverted to a back 4 again and use him as a defensive full back, as he is almost as limited as Dummett, but that would be to the detriment of the team. If Bruce is going to continue with Rafas 3-2-2-2-1/5-4-1 system, Manquillo should be a clear starter.

I think it's because most people could see that there was real quality in Viana, but when you put a rather slow, non-dribbling, weak, young central midfielder on the wing you can't expect much. I still think he would have been a great player for us, and probably eventually a bigger club, if he had been eased in, developed and used in his natural position.
