Russell Cushing RIP Former Newcastle United official Russell Cushinghas died unexpectedly following a short illness. He was 78. Norwich-born, Russell joined the Magpies in 1971 from the Canaries, initially as Assistant Secretary before succeeding Malcolm Hoole as Club Secretary two years later. Cushing acted as United's General Manager for many years, overseeing player contracts and transfers ranging from Malcolm Macdonald's departure to Arsenal through to the later arrivals of Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer. Other commitments included fixture arrangement, attending disciplinary tribunals, involvement in commercial activities and ticket sales - tasks later covered by an ever-increasing head count, but all passing across his desk at the time. That range of activities saw Russell act as a spokesman for United on subjects ranging from wrangles over the ground lease with the City Council to reconstruction in the wake of the Taylor Report. Any incidents of hooliganism were also routinely following by statements penned by him in the following match programme. Appointed to the board in late 1989 ahead of Sir John Hall's arrival at Gallowgate the following year, he served as Chief Operating Officer from June 2001. Russell ended an association with the Magpies spanning almost 36 years during 2007, in the months following the completion of Mike Ashley's takeover.

All managers go through bad spells - Eddie will turn this around. Tino, Hall and Wissa MASSIVELY improves our first XI which in turn massively improves our bench. The constant upheaval top level changes these last few years haven’t done him any favours yet he still won us a major trophy and secured champions league football for the second time in three years. We were relegation fodder when he took over yet he has delivered finishes of 11th, 4th, 7th and 5th. Two CL campaigns as well as being denied of Europe due to Man Utd beating Man City in the FA cup final. Two League cup finals - with more than likely another two legged semi final this season coming up - not to mention barring a Trippier last minute howler at Chelsea, we’d have had a two legged semi vs Boro. He’s been virtually the only spokesman for us and has literally drove us on and of course, first major somatic trophy in 70 years. He has far more than enough credit to be given time to turn our league form around. Anyone who currently wants him sacked needs sectioned!

Seen him four times - three at larger venues where he was quite reserved - once at Dougie’s in Hebburn where he was absolutely brilliant and was there until about 1am talking, getting photos and signing stuff - WHAT A MAN! Enjoy mate!
