Ronnie; Meanwhile, young starlet Aarons has impressed on Tyneside since excelling in last season’s pre-season, but his frustrating campaign last season saw his appearances limited to just six due to injuries. He has returned and impressed once more this summer on the Magpies’ US tour – netting twice in the 4-3 defeat to Portland Timbers – which has reportedly put some of the Premier League’s big boys on notice. Aarons has a year left on his current Toon deal and has been attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool but McClaren and Co at Newcastle are hopeful the 19-year-old will sign a new contract with the club within the next two weeks.

Republic president Warren Smith said: “Sunderland had talked to us early, then appeared to be headed to Africa. “They came back to us after we added Newcastle, but they also needed a second match (Sunderland-Pachuca). “We asked the staff, and they were 50-50 about doing those matches. “We’re growing a brand, so it’s not all about making money. “Sometimes you take risks.” However, the home club will reap the benefits of a sell out crowd.

At the end of Tuesday night’s game Brewers staff handed out vouchers for free tickets to see a match in the next few weeks. However, that will have to be on another day, and after the club’s vice-president of communications Tyler Barnes and media relations manager Zach Weber – who also laid on a media football game before the main event – indicated there would be an open invite to return for a game it summed up the good feeling that was in place around what ironically was a bit of a bad-tempered affair on the field. But with the Brewers keen to showcase their ability to put on other events apart from football they can at least look back on a well-contested and genuinely entertaining game for the neutral. Toon players were also handed goodie bags from the Brewers and the likes of Papiss Cisse and Gael Bigirimana donned baseball caps from the home club. It was clear that the gateway of Geordieland will remain ajar for the Milwaukee mob. Miller Park Club Atlas v Newcastle United at Miller Park, home of Milwaukee Brewers Miller Park is easily one of the biggest and best stadiums I’ve ever had the pleasure of covering Newcastle at. With its huge stands and unique retractable roof it still made for an excellent atmosphere even though the venue was less than half full. That said, the 21,256 crowd was still a decent achievement for a city that doesn’t have a professional soccer team. Some locals I spoke too said that baseball and NFL – with the nearby Green Bay Packers also a massive draw – would always take priority. However, with Winconsin’s youth soccer leagues trying to grow quickly you got the sense that in and around Miller Park, and the vibes from some staff, there was a hunger for their own MLS team. Who knows, Newcastle could return one day to take on Milwaukee on the big stage. Ask any sports journalist what makes them happy when covering their respective sports and they won’t tell you it’s how good the buffet at games is. OK, going to places like Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea does have its perks with all three clubs laying on a great pre-match meal and service throughout on Premier League days. But most would swap that for a decent WiFi signal! Down the years I’ve witnessed some colleagues close to throwing their laptop in the bin as they struggle for a signal! It’s even managed to earn a Twitter site called @pressproblems in which journalists offer a sideways glance at the issues that probably seem so minor to the outsider but are everything when working towards tight deadlines. Thankfully, like the trip to Milwaukee, the WiFi worked like a dream as copy was pinged across the pond back to the Chronicle offices. Newcastle United fans make the trip to watch the Magpies v Club Atlas at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers Different continents, same old story It's always good to meet up with colleagues from a different country and it was a pleasure to meet Charles F Gardner of the Journal Sentinel in Milwaukee. Charles’ main job is covering the basketball side Milwaukee Bucks and he travels around the USA to see them in action. However, after chatting with Charles it was also obvious he was a keen football fan too. And no sooner had he touched down from Las Vegas at breakfast time after covering San Antonio Spurs play the Bucks in the NBA Summer League, he was quickly turning things around to cover Newcastle v Club Atlas. With an 11pm deadline fast approaching, the usual anxious wait for players and managers began to unfold; thankfully he was on target. Afterwards, stories of hectic away days and keeping pace with deadline were exchanged and while we’re over 3,700 miles from home when it comes down to it, whether you’re covering Newcastle or the Bucks the same challenges still exist in this game.

Steve McClaren An Update from the US We have now made the journey from Milwaukee to Sacramento having completed the first leg of our US tour and the travel has given me an ideal opportunity to let you know how things are going. We’ve really enjoyed being in the United States so far. Talking to supporters, they are delighted to see the players here and to get the opportunity to watch them train and play. We had a lot of supporters down to see us training in Milwaukee on Monday and even more inside Miller Park for our first game against Club Atlas on Tuesday. There were a lot of black and white shirts around – and a lot of people with American accents wearing them, which is great to see – and they created a fantastic atmosphere. Tuesday night's game against a strong, physical Club Atlas team was a very good workout for us. It was just what we needed at this stage of pre-season and we got through 70 minutes at a good tempo. It took us a little while to adjust. Atlas are a good side. They were quick and direct and you could see they were ahead of us in their pre-season preparations. Once we adjusted, we dominated the second half especially and created good chances. We were good with the ball. We had the courage to play; the players wanted the ball. That said, I didn’t think in the first half that we were good without the ball. Atlas were very aggressive, they won more duels and tackles and broke up play more than us. At half time, I said to the players that they have to look after themselves but they must make sure they compete. They certainly did that in the second half. We were aggressive back and there was only one team in it after that. The performance at this point is obviously important, but so was the spirit. We were 2-0 down after a short time and the players’ heads could’ve dropped. But we stayed in the game. We got a deserved goal back just before half time and we looked like scoring again. Ultimately, we’ve come through unscathed with no injuries and I’m very pleased about that. Our aim is to give the players as many minutes as possible as we head deeper into pre-season. I thought the end of the game was great in terms of being able to see fans again and for those in the stadium to get closer to the team. The players went around the stadium and signed autographs, took photos and really took their time doing so. That’s important. As well as preparing, we are also here to see people who haven’t seen the team for some time or who are watching the club for the first time. The people of Milwaukee and the supporters who have travelled to see us so far have been fantastic. We are now in California ahead of Saturday’s game and we have two days to prepare for it. We have watched Sacramento Republic and it will be a different game but equally as challenging, particularly in such warm temperatures. We had a test against Atlas and we’ll get one on Saturday. We have also welcomed Gini Wijnaldum to the group today and I'm sure you're all very excited to see him get started. There’s a long way to go for us all. We need to continue building fitness levels over what is a relatively short pre-season. We have to build a winning culture and a good environment, build the team and get them on board with what we’re trying to accomplish. We want the players to have attitude and to fight for every minute. The signs I’ve seen from the team are that the players are taking on board what we’re telling them, what we’re coaching them. Ha ha! He actually outdid himself in the first 30 minutes - I've never seen him as bad and we should have been 5-0 down! I know Colo has been on the decline but I still think you'll get a good season from him alongside a strong commanding quick centre half! Certainly not Williamson though! He should be nowhere near ours or any other Premier League club's team! Well, maybe Sunderland's!

Yohan Cabaye WOULD welcome a return to Newcastle United – but only if they can create a winning team, reckons Olivier Bernard. United have been sounded out about a return for the Paris Saint Germain man in the last couple of weeks, but Crystal Palace and West Ham are the clubs who have shown most interest in moving for the £10m midfielder. Roma, managed by his former boss Rudi Garcia, are also in the mix. But Bernard – who worked with the club during the first influx of French players and was regularly in contact with Cabaye – thinks he would be open to coming back to St James’ Park. And he thinks earning a place in France’s plans for Euro 2016 would be his motivation. “Yohan Cabaye would come back if the team was right and we had the ambition to win things and challenge rather than the business ambition we have at the moment. I think he would come back to Newcastle United, without a shadow of a doubt,” Chronicle columnist Bernard said. “So far though he would probably look at it and not be quite so sure. I can guarantee he won’t be the first signing, he would want to see what’s coming. He needs to make sure that he goes to the right club, not one that is losing every week, because he wants to be involved for France at Euro 2016.” United are assessing their next move but after moves for a clutch of their ‘Plan A’ targets have lost momentum, they may revisit alternatives. Cabaye was ruled out earlier in the summer but a loan option might appeal. The big rival at the moment appears to be Alan Pardew’s Palace, with the ex-Magpies chief setting out ambitious plans at Selhurst Park. Bernard feels Pardew has joined a club on the up, and is not surprised that Palace are challenging. “It’s a difficult decision for him but I’m not that surprised that Crystal Palace are looking at him and are making a play,” he said. “Palace are in a similar position to Newcastle when Alan Pardew was the manager here. They have a decent squad and I think they are trying to go to the next level. It actually looks like a better squad than most and I think they will be competing in the top ten. “For him it’s a difficult decision now but am I surprised he’s looking to come back to England? Not at all. “He probably left for financial reasons but he hasn’t played enough for Paris Saint Germain and now he’s on the bench for France, which is not where he wants to be.” United’s fans are frustrated at a lack of action and Bernard admits their frustration is understandable. He hopes the club decide to change tact this summer. “Newcastle could do with a player like him but they need to change their whole business model really,” he said.
