I’ve said it a hundred times on here but we’re just so much better with him in the team. Of course we are, he’s the best CB we’ve ever had. He’s got an intensity that translates to us being a level higher both defensively and going forward. In terms of the tangible we miss his interceptions and runs into space up the pitch so much.

Playing devil’s advocate we didn’t spend £260m in the summer preceding that one to supposedly construct a squad to compete on multiple fronts. Also, 2 years further along and we still haven’t added creativity to the midfield. We all knew that was an issue years ago.

Plenty teams had better windows with lesser budgets. Yes we lost out on top targets because of wages but our plan was nonexistent at worst and very poorly executed at best. Going into the season with no senior striker and trying to hold on to Callum Wilson early in the window speaks to a real lack of strategic direction, scouting, flexibility and an overly sentimental approach.
