It depends what you define as big name, they have always signed players for big fees:
Pepe was 80 mill euros
Torreia, Sokratis, Leno were 20-30 mill each
Xhaka and Mustafi were 40 mill euros
Sanchez was 45 mill euros
Cazorla and Podolski were 20 mill euros 8 years ago
Nasri and Arshavin
Gervinho
They have spent a lot of money on these players. Some were class but most were duds.
I think if Benitez had ASM, Rondon, and Almiron for a full season he’d have them top 8 easy.
For 2/3 of last season he was relying on Atsu, Joselu and an awful Kenedy. Almiron and ASM are a huge upgrade.
Apart from the centre backs. There again, if they just passed short instead of hoofing it wouldn't be an issue.
Clarke is good on the ball. The other two not so much.
Good question. Surely some of those Pulis sides had to be worse.
As repulsive as those sides were they were at least good at what they did.
We don't do anything well.
It feels like peak Pardew days just with inferior individuals.
I disagree with that, think he's been our best CM.
That means f*** all, they have all been s*** apart from the odd game from Shelvey. He has been s*** mind, but the worst thing is as has been pointed out before is that this midfield from the Championship is still first choice three year later
I actually think he's been playing well this season personally. He's a name on the teamsheet that I never mind seeing. He defends well, does his job, and recycles possession well.
Totally disagree respectively
He’s not physically capable of playing central midfield in the premier league. Yes he makes some decent passes forward. But you need more than that. Look at Tielemans.
So current injuries are Saint-Maximin, Dummett, Lascelles, Clarke, Shelvey, Schar, Willems, Manquillo.
Fitness issues with Carroll, Lejeune,
It’s shambolic!
They are when fit. Maybe Lascelles slots in for Fernandez when fit. They are lacking fitness and when your own team only has 20% possession, it’s not easy.
