The squad is fine-ish and one of the problems with already being this good is that it's very hard to improve meaningfully unless you're bringing in a legitimate superstar. And that's just not something you can reasonably expect in the January window. I would like a backup fullback just so I don't need to have a heart attack every time Hall or Livramento as much as slightly stumble on the pitch. Beyond that, keeping the powder dry for the summer isn't the worst thing in the world.

Improving the academy is arguably even more difficult than improving the first team and is the sort of thing that takes 5-10 years of sustained investment before you've built up enough of a reputation that you are consistently bringing in top prospects outside of your geographic area. I think we're in a much better place than we were when Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll were basically the only academy prospects to become first team regulars over about two decades. But still a ways to go.
