The average person from NYC or Jersey: douchebag. The area is like the Eden of the Douchebag. In biblical terms, the genesis of the douchebag occurred somewhere around there. The conception wouldn't have been immaculate though. -

And say what you will about Shearer, he generally tends to keep his mouth shut in a dignified manner and let the other guy skewer himself. -

Llambias is amazing in his ability to grow in levels of odium each time he speaks. I salute the man. I thought he was just an absolutely horrendous tit. He blew my expectations out of the water. -

If this is true, and I am still a bit skeptical, then that monstrously fat fuck will be absolved of blame on this one. Still think it was like the beginning of WWI where nobody had the desire nor the will to stop it from happening. -

Not to be a dick, but one of our ironclad memes is an inflated sense of self-entitlement. So we probably do have more glory hunters per capita than in the UK. However, when I lived in Scotland, there were enough glory hunters there to make me question this. I certainly see nothing to defend. However, there are regions in the country where people are absolutely mad about their local team, even if it is a high school football one. -
Most footballers are thick as pig shit. We just have to accept this. Once we do fully, then the disappointment from their daft comments will lose its edge.

And even better, baseball has Albert Pujols, the most hilarious name in sports. When I first heard the commentator say, "Pujols takes a ball", I just about shit myself laughing. -

Baseball is great in other ways. Go to Pac Bell Park. Get absolutely drunk. Watch your buddy make a complete ass of himself. Every once in awhile, focus on the movement out of the corner of your eye, that movement being the actual game. Watch a few drunk idiots get arrested when the Dodgers are in town. Drink more. Barely remember the score the next day. -

I honestly didn't know what to do when the Giants won the World Series. 35 years of heartbreak. That utter shit World Series in 2002 when Dusty Baker snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Even when we were winning 3 games to 1, in the back of my mind I still expected us to blow it. And that fucking team. Who would have guessed that they were going to win the World Series, let alone be in it? -

College football has plenty of diehard, passionate fans. The Deep South lives and breathes for their high school and college football. For years, the only person greater than Jesus to my grandad was Bobby Bowden. On baseball, you've got Red Sox fans. In the NFL, you've got the Bears, Steelers, Packers. So the passion is there, but only really entrenched in relatively small regions. -

Well done polpolpol for your encyclopedia caliber example of pedantic. I particularly like your elegant ability to skewer this holier-than-thou argument with a holier-than-thou spearhead of an argument yourself. Quality. -

well said. We don't have enough information to rate him as a manager. That said, the guy will always be The Legend to me. His goals, his intelligence, and when he lost his pace, the ability to adapt. Fuck it man, the guy was a force of nature with an indomitable will. How he played on the field was always a template for me in how to perform your best. I fucking hate the cliche 110%, but if there was one man on the pitch who could achieve that, it was Shearer. The question is will he be able to translate this philosophy to less dedicated players just riding on the crest of a wave? Or will be an utter asshole to them, and end up like Souness in alienating a fair few of his players? Could go either way for me. Wouldn't be surprised if he succeeded, or if he failed. But I will certainly give him a fair shake, and not assume that he is utter shit because of those 8 games in charge. -
This is why I think it is unlikely that we will go down. After cooling down, I even think a 30% chance of relegation is way too high now, particularly with West Brom's abysmal form. I am not comparing the squads. I am more looking at our position in 2009. We were horrible, but there were some absolute piles of dogshit in the league that even a horrible squad like ours should have limped ahead. I did not expect us to get relegated that season. I really didn't. But we did. It seems that Ashley is quite good at manufacturing chaos when there doesn't need to be any. The fat fuck is clearly an agent of entropy.

The difficulty is, if you come from a country where there are no local football teams or all you see are Prem/la Liga games, how will the team choose you? I always find myself rooting for one team when I watch football, even if I know absolutely nothing about the team. Maybe that's the same for everyone. For the record, I never like Barca (despite the fact that I really should for historic reasons) because I once saw a UEFA Cup (or was it Cup-Winners?) game against Villa in the 80s when they were unspeakably dirty, cheating bastards. One game was all it took. You can try to generalize about US sport, but just look at Cleveland. Haven't won anything in ages in any sport, but some of the Cavs fanbase is rabid. Then you come to the Browns, widely and fervently supported. When their club was taken away they managed to essentially get it re-started from scratch. My Italian club was Milan as a kid - absolutely no idea why but when they were fucking brilliant in the 80s I felt great. Was I a glory-hunter? No idea. I'm lucky in that my father was taken to Spurs by his Uncle Cyril as a kid, then he took me and we were close enough to walk to the ground. I'm proud of that, but am also proud of any Spurs fan who chose us (poor bastards). It's the old dichotomy, if you're from, say, Cleveland and are a Spurs fan then you're a brave, thoughtful man of taste. If you're an Everton fan then you're a misguided plastic. Yet Newcastle did somehow choose me. Kindred spirits, I suppose. -

Please don't talk about the Boston Red Sox! They are owned by the same prats that own Liverpool. As a Baltimore Orioles fan and an NUFC fan, I've got enough reason to drive up there tonight and piss on their ramshackel dogshit stadium. I've been thinking about doing it a lot in the last 36 hours. Well, I am a Giants fan. I'm still in shock that we won the World Series. My ever-suffering chip on my shoulder melted, and I feel the more naked for it. -

be an Earthquakes fan in the MLS, and before that in the NASL. I spent 9 fucking years going to games at Spartan Stadium when there were 6,000 of us, and when the Clash/Earthquakes were absolute dross in a shit league. Then we got good, we played exciting shit, we got a good manager in Frank Yallop, then a fantastic manager in Dominic Kinnear, and we move to fucking Houston. Then they bring the team back after I fuck off to Los Angeles, and although I still support them, the magic of 2001-2005 completely gone. -

One thing that bothers me. I can't stand when people say that they are the best fans, the most loyal, etc. Fuck it. I won't deign to speak for anybody else. My love affair with this club is my own personal battle, and I won't pretend to know what other fans are going through. Saying that you're a better fan is just petty self-congratulation. It's fucking pointless. So I'd never go that far. I do believe, as I said earlier, that I have a bit more context than a "plastic fan", so the highs probably mean that much more to me -

As an aside, I suppose that it is good for the NFL that two teams with fiercely loyal fan bases are in the Superbowl. Although in truth my interest has waned ever since the Oilers became the Tennessee Titans. Not that I liked the Oilers. In fact, I hate every Texas team. But the very possibility of an Oilers-Packers Superbowl was too fantastic, specifically because my loyalty to comedy trumps everything else. -

It depends. Steelers fans would still support them even if Ben Roethlisberger slipped their wife a mickey. In fact, they would probably criticize the wife for complaining. -

Vinny Green Balls replied to Pilko's topic in Football
If he went on to score 5-9 more goals, we would likely get as much. We are in a worse position without him, and still 15 games to go. Teams have gone on worse runs than picking up less than 10 points out of the last 15 matches. I don't see it happening. But as I said before, I don't like some asshole putting the supporter in this uncomfortable position, just wondering if we will drop like a stone now. How will Carroll's leaving affect the morale of the players? Who knows? But I am a lot more worried now than I was on Sunday. -

My girlfriend is all right. She's fucking nuts...just like this club. But in some ways, I would gladly trade her in for a team competing for honors. I hope to god that she never discovers this site.
