I'll probably be back in Brisbane for the QPR game, haven't booked flights yet though so may stay a little longer. Sydney's a much better city imo, only ever been there on holiday though. Brisbane's big drawcards are climate and the Gold / Sunny Coasts- it's just the city itself is a little meh. And compare to the effect that Ablett has had on the Gold Coast- people still turn up to watch Collingwood play up here, not to watch Ablett play. It's the teams that matter long-term, not the individuals. Particularly in Melbourne, where the locals already have loyalty to an AFL club (can't really comment on rugby league in Sydney) it will take a lot longer to truly take off. There's a reason the A-league isn't played in winter, and it's because the FFA just doesn't have the confidence to run against the AFL in the southern states.

Sydney- think she's mostly on the mark. I'm not sure that there is any quick-fix answer for the A-league (and personally not sure if I want one). Football support (whatever the code) is a tribal thing. I've been to a few Brisbane Roar games, and while it was fun there was nothing there that was going to grab me back. And I look around at the crowd, and I think the same probably applies to most of them as well. We've already got our own allegiances- whether they be the Broncos, the Sharks, the Magpies or whoever. A couple of marquee signings here and there aren't going to shake that, developing a viable football competition will take years if not decades.
