Their defence makes perfect sense. FFP is counterintuitive. It forces decisions that make no commercial sense. It is a tail that wags the dog. Clubs are incentivised to sell young homegrown stars to rivals, They are incentivised to leverage the balance sheet and redevelop a stadium. They are incentivised to sell on the cheap so that the 'profit on disposal' falls into a particular three-year accounting window.

Such an utterly pointless match. We cannot compete with them. -

The passage of play before the goal was comical. Almiron passing it to Chelsea under no pressure, about 5 missed clearances, Burn slicing it into row z. This season man ? -

Neville talks about the mess in build up totally ignoring a wonderful piece of work from Bruno that takes out multiple Chelsea players -

Longstaff doing his laces whilst we are in a promising position. -
Likewise I was in stitches thinking this was a beautifully written piece of satire.

Commentators willing a penalty for something fairly innocuous, just for the sake of adding some controversy and post match discussion.

Longstaff needs to enrol in lessons on how to win free kicks -
Agree. FFP is completely flawed. It imposes rules that stifle competition. It does little to protect sustainability. It creates illogical incentives that lack economic sense. It is not, however, the primary reason why this Newcastle team lost away at Arsenal.

Agree fantasy football is ridiculous these days. Immediately switch off when my mates discuss who they have triple captained this week. Showing my age but I remember when you had to send a self addressed envelope to the Daily Telegraph to submit your team and transfers. I also remember some newspapers operated with both the premier league and Scottish league in the same competition. Think it might have been the Times. You could pick up Marco Negri for £1.5m and he was banging in 3 goals a game against the likes of Patrick Thistle.

PIF is a sovereign wealth fund. They operate in a similar way to how a large pension scheme would operate in Europe. They are an asset owner not an asset manager. They couldn't possibly try to actively manage day to day operations of every asset they own and nor would they want to.

Dan Ashworth (no longer working for Manchester United)

I would criticise the entitlement of man united fans in this scenario but I expect Newcastle fans were similar when the club were trying to prise him from Brighton. However, the comparison in this thread by the likes of Froggy on the relative constraints of FFP between Man United and Newcastle is simply laughable. I am amazed that football fans comment on finance when they simply don't understand it. The alarm bells usually ring when a fan quotes 'net transfer spend' over a random arbitrary period which suits their particular argument. -

This ref is beyond a joke. Some of the fouls not given for both teams have been ridiculous
-
As an aside, we have become a very naiive team for NOT committing cynical fouls when defending transitions.

Newcastle United 4-4 Luton Town (03/02/24) | Reaction: pg40
Boey_Jarton replied to Yorkie's topic in Football
It would have been a bit of a random and questionable signing at the start of the season but Barkley has looked consistently good for Luton all season and clearly would have been a very useful player in our squad. -
This is exactly it The lino is not flagging for a penalty and wouldn't dream of doing so. They always sit on fence and leave it to the ref for penalty calls. But the fact he gives a foul means var looks at the penalty through the context a foul has already been given. Not sure that logic stacks up but can't complain as Burn was skinned and continued to foul into the box.
