It's quite interesting how managers that come up to the PL with a relatively unfancied side and either go down with them or are harshly sacked mid-season are always rated a lot lower in general perception than managers who have a good record in the Championship without actually going up to the Premier League. Boothroyd, Holloway, Adkins, McDermott, Warnock... none particularly rated really. Yet look at Poyet, Clark, Howe, O'Driscoll etc... the media love talking them up (and others) as potentially fantastic managers.

Like fuck would I trust Pardew to implement a successful 3-5-2 style formation. I still have nightmares about Shearer doing it away at Stoke, deploying David Edgar as a sort of half-sweeper for christs sake.

We don't know that he 'refused' to play there, though. He obviously wanted to play through the middle and clearly made this plain to Pardew; I think Pardew knew how important he was to us and therefore tried to keep him sweet to everybody else's detriment.
