It wouldn't surprise me if our sole CB target remains Guehi, and that entire thing is also tied up in this same mess, with the player holding out to see what happens with Liverpool's spending first and whether they go all in with forward options means he signs for us as a back up. It's fucking astonishing that we can't have gone and found a high quality CB with potential and bring them into the club like we did with Botman from a much weaker position three years ago. It is a notoriously easy position to sign quality in IMO if you have a good coach.

We have have got to get a Wilson replacement and a CB in with our existing budget before anything at all happens with Isak. Even if it means slightly overpaying. Then if you can line up a couple of big signings to offset his impact - IE a top drawer high potential CF and a CM, and they're willing to pay upwards of £150 million - maybe you pull the trigger and do all those deals. If you can't do that then you make him stay another year and go again. Simple as that.

It really shouldn't be paralysing our transfer efforts though. Even at the lowest estimates we should have good money left for a big signing at CB and striker. It really is absurd that we're in this situation.

I've said it before but you basically have to almost treat him like a bonus player at this point. You can't rely on him as a legit member of the squad. We need two CBs really given the fact that Burn/Schar have potentially only got 1 more top season in them. It's why the lack of movement on a CB for me is insane. Even if it's more of a cheaper development profile with a big signing pushed back a year given we need two anyway.

I think we've basically been doing that to be fair. Minteh, Cordero, Salia, Park etc. Just at the moment the second group is at a much lower pricepoint because we need money for the first team.

There's perhaps something true that if he did go it would loosen up the logjam of us needing to penny pinch on every single signing and we'd then be able to act a little bit more loosely on asking prices to get what we need. But realistically if he did go we'd then need to get over the line at the bare minimum 2 new strikers, a RCB and probably a CM/attacking midfielder in a month. It just seems completely unfeasible at the way we work.

I'd probably rather just see him gone if it meant we got two new strikers and other positions strengthened. The issue is the proven inability to do that this summer.

There's been absolutely nothing seeming even remotely likely in terms of a CB signing. No genuine rumours or likely targets even. Our entire focus has seemingly been on getting in a new CF for weeks, which is understandable in the circumstances, but Jesus Christ we have multiple positions we needed to fill this summer and made seemingly no progress on any of them.
