He was way more productive going forward before Rafa came in IMO. When he tries too hard he begins falling over himself loads and s*** like that. I think he was always pretty good defensively when playing right wing. We expected too much from him going forward IMO Eh??? We signed him as an attacking midfielder! The stats (not to mention his performances) suggest we had every right to expect more, especially given how good him and his agent keep telling everyone he is. If we did then we are more stupid than i thought considering he was a CM for Toulouse who had a very poor goalscoring record. He's generally atrocious defensively. He can be an effective attacking force when he wants to be.
