BBC's Phil McNulty (Chief Football Writer no less) 'Hands up. Got this one very wrong. I was convinced Newcastle United would be relegated given the ill-feeling surrounding Steve Bruce's appointment and the apparent miracle performed by Rafael Benitez. Maybe not such a Benitez miracle after all as sound management by Bruce put them in a similar 13th placing without the over-blown reverence reserved for Benitez. Safe and sound.'

The club holds the fans in contempt, its a natural consequence. It's a shame but the club brings it on itself. -

100%. I watch and listen to SBR and Rafa and look at what we have now and weep. We had gold in our hands and let it slip through our fingers, for what? Interesting comparison. Sir Bob took us from bottom of the league to three successive top five finishes and the last 16 of the Champions League. But at that point, the vast majority of the posters on this site (as with many other supporters) thought he was an old git who had lost the plot and were clamouring for his dismissal. Rafa took us to 10th place, moved on to the Chinese League, and was mourned as a god. In Sir Bob's case, we really did have gold and didn't realise it. I don't think the evidence is quite as strong with Rafa. SBR arrived in September we finished 11th. The following season we finished 11th. From that point he kicked on, thanks in no small part to being allowed to bring in players he wanted and having the benefit of some pretty handy players on the books when he arrived. Maybe if Rafa had stayed for an equivalent period of time with a more supportive board you'd have your evidence.

Always remember the above and that Shredded Wheat Advert when I was a kid. Seemed like a likeable, sincere and humble bloke. RIP.
